Totally Local Company Ltd are currently looking to recruit a Horticulture/Grounds Maintenance Apprentice to be based in Stockport. You will join a skilled and experienced gardening team and will receive on the job training in Grounds Maintenance duties plus sweeping, litter picking and the use of manual tools to complete weeding and pruning.

You will also receive full training in regard to any grounds machinery, and grass cutting equipment that is appropriate. Further training opportunities including Spraying qualifications and Health & Safety qualifications will be provided within the workplace.

The process will include an assessment for Maths and English and the training will be provided in the workplace by a college provider working towards the Horticulture & Landscape Operative Level 2 (Standard).


Duties and Responsibilities


  • You'll take responsibility for the, application of Health and Safety practice, security and safe use of plant and machinery.
  • You'll ensure all records concerning safe use of chemicals including pesticides, herbicides and fertilisers are kept up to date
  • You'll undertake winter maintenance duties including manual gritting, filling and siting of grit bins and snow/ice clearance, as required.
  • You'll assist in the recycling of waste collected, wherever possible
  • You'll carry out basic health and safety checks for self, team members and machinery used.
  • You'll work with a range of mechanical and electrical equipment including gardening, street cleansing machinery, portable hand tools and industrial power washers.
  • You'llundertake any future skill specific training to allow the development and delivery of the business unit.
  • Operatives will work within various sections of the department to ensure maximum range knowledge and experience is gained.

Skills Knowledge and Expertise


  • You must have the ability to undertake work outside in all weather conditions
  • You must be enthusiastic and have ability to become competent in undertaking a variety of gardening duties including the use of specialised equipment.
  • You'll have both your English Level 1 & Maths Level 1
  • You'll have the ability to undertake general gardening duties involving manual work and the use of machinery and equipment.
  • You'll works co-operatively with others and ensures participation within teams and across organisational boundaries to support the achievement of shared goals
  • You'll be able to communicate effectively
