Full job description

We are looking to recruit an experienced Head Gardener to be responsible for maintaining the grounds of two diverse and impressive gardens in Hertfordshire. One being a private estate with the other a very high-profile public garden. The gardens include extensive formal borders, shrub beds and lawned areas. We are looking to appoint someone with an excellent work ethic and the ability to look at the bigger picture.

Role Responsibilities:

  • Managing and overseeing two gardens, your role will encompass:
  • Maintaining the gardens, hedges, lawns and various borders;
  • Roads, drives and paths – The main drive, entrances and various garden paths;
  • Design and plan additional planting to develop the garden as required;
  • Employees – There is an Under Gardener to assist you, they will benefit from your knowledge and experience, continued development is essential;
  • Equipment – There will be a broad range of garden, grounds, turf care and relevant machinery, equipment and tools which the successful candidate will be responsible for including maintenance and upkeep, and completing relevant inspection and fault records;
  • Health and Safety – The successful candidate will have overall responsibility for health and safety by maintaining a safe system of working and completing and maintaining site risk assessments;
  • Willingness’ to travel to other sites during the winter months as and when required.

Essential Requirements

  • Five or more years’ experience within the industry;
  • Strong plant knowledge;
  • Previous experience with large formal gardens;
  • Horticulture qualification level 2 or 3;
  • Professional and presentable demeanour with positive client liaison skills;
  • Full clean driving license;
  • Mechanical knowledge of industry equipment and machinery.

Desirable Requirements

  • Landscape industry knowledge;
  • Emergency first aid at work;
  • Supervisory/Team leader experience;
  • Experience of working with volunteers;
  • PA1, PA6 safe use of pesticides.

Job Types: Full-time, Permanent

Pay: £30,000.00-£35,000.00 per year
