Garden Centre Grounds and Maintenance Team Member
Lanchester Garden Centre
To accurately perform duties within the Garden Centre in line with the expectations of the Garden Centre Manager and those listed below. Please note this is not an exhaustive list and you may be asked to assist with other duties that are reasonable and inline with the business needs.
Essential Responsibilities
- Be responsible for completing routine maintenance, undertaking repairs and tackling a range of other practical tasks involved with the maintenance of a busy garden centre. Carrying out repairs for the centre as and when needed and ensure that we have all areas in good working order, including painting, electrical work, basic plumbing etc
- To manage the refuse on site, from regular waste, the recycling and also the scrap management.
- Building and maintaining displays, assisting with the retail side in peak season, having an overall hands on approach to any garden centre tasks.
- To work as part of the grounds team to help with the maintenance of the gardens and grounds including grass cutting, border maintenance etc Weeding, trimming, and mulching plants using gardening tools.
- Pruning, shaping and spacing plants, maintaining flower beds and general centre centre areas and in the Tropical Village. Watering all flowers and plants on the grounds
- Clearing rubbish, weeds, brush and debris on a company’s grounds and ensure entrance area us maintain for opening. Cleaning the company’s grounds by removing rubbish and litter daily
- Taking care of all groundskeeping supplies, tools etc and tidiness and organisation in the Potting Shed
- Working within our Zoo with maintenance tasks including basic electric, wood work, repairs and cleaning pond filters.
- Ensuring the grounds are clean, safe and usable by guest and visitors including, Daily Weeding, Watering and Feeding in gardens and grounds to ensuring no area is unkempt or dying or needing weeding.
- Taking on special landscaping or planting projects as deemed necessary
- Have a can do attitude and be able to identify any issues you see around the site including the maintenance of the grounds and gardens.
- If interacting and assistant customers with loads/ purchases, ensure that each customer receives outstanding customer service and professional conduct when engaging with them.
- In the retail space and the wider grounds ensure displays are tidy, stock is retainable and removed to reduced where applicable and ensure effective arrangement of plants and garden wear to up sell product lines alongside live stock. Re-stocking plant displays
Required Skills/Knowledge
- Ability to communicate with customers, other peers and management.
- Must be well presented, strong, outgoing and friendly, able to quickly build a good rapport with customers and have great enthusiasm for gardening.
- Ability to drive a John Deer, and operate garden tools and petrol equipment
- A qualification in horticulture ideally, or a passion for gardening.
- Basic plumbing, joinery and electric skills.
- Basic plant knowledge or the willingness to learn about plants and gardening.
- Manually handling ability. The ability to lift repeatedly for at least 4 hours. The ability to stoop and bend repeatedly for several hours.
- The ability to work in the outdoors, which could include cold and hot weather.
