Job Overview
We are seeking a dedicated and skilled and experienced Gardener to lead our small team. The ideal candidate will have a passion for horticulture and and a wealth of knowledge.

The head gardener is responsible for the care and maintenance of a 4 acre double walled garden that is open to the public on a daily basis and also used to host weddings and events. The gardens must look their best throughout the year. The job incorporates working at a second site growing some the plants for sale within the Walled Garden.

The gardener will lead a small team and the volunteers joining our programme. The gardener will work with the owner who designs each area, to ensure that the gardens continuously improve and continue to 'wow' the public.

Accomodation available for single person or couple, not suitable for a family or pets.

Duties

  • Maintaining all areas of the garden, trees, shrubs, perennial beds, lawns, borders, and annual displays.
  • Weeding, pruning, pest control. Planting propagating, and growing from seed.
  • Irrigation as required.
  • Operate power tools and hand tools safely for various gardening tasks.
  • Assist in landscape maintenance by planting, transplanting, and caring for flowers, shrubs, and trees.
  • Monitor plant health and identify any signs of disease or pest infestations.
  • Maintain cleanliness of all areas by removing debris and litter.
  • Collaborate with owner to design and implement new garden layouts or features.
  • Keep records of plant care activities and report any issues to management.

Skills

  • A full clean driving license is essential
  • Proficient in groundskeeping techniques with a strong understanding of plant care.
  • Experience in using power tools such as lawn mowers, trimmers, and blowers, essential.
  • Knowledge of irrigation systems and their maintenance an advantage.
  • Ability to work with hand tools effectively for planting and garden upkeep.
  • Familiarity with growing various types of plants and understanding their specific needs.
  • An interest in rare and unusual plants
  • Strong attention to detail with an eye for aesthetics in landscape design absolutely essential.
  • Excellent physical stamina to perform manual labour outdoors in varying weather conditions.
