Full job description

A super opportunity for an experienced gardener to support a private family’s large country garden and grounds on a weekly basis circa 12 hours per week. This is a long-term opportunity based near Bagthorpe in Norfolk replacing the current gardener who has been there for several years. Set in beautiful surroundings with formal lawns, wilder natural areas, kitchen garden, a small woodland and pond the garden is truly stunning to the eye and would really suit a passionate, efficient and hard working professional.

This is a self-employed opportunity offering a competitive hourly pay depending on experience.

The role

The role covers the full range of needs expected of a large country garden and grounds. Day-to-day work includes tending to beautiful flowers beds, formal borders and archways, and keeping on top of weeding throughout. There is a generous lawn and large amount of hedgerow to maintain, as well as a vegetable garden and greenhouse requiring year-round care including growing, propagating and taking cuttings. A small area of woodland also needs regular attention, with tasks such as felling trees, chopping and stacking wood, and taking care of garden waste. The property also has a beautiful, well-established pond with a healthy wildlife population so experience or an interest in pond care would be very welcome, though it is not essential. Beyond the core duties for the garden, the ideal candidate will be happy to turn their hand to whatever the grounds need with a versatile and practical hands-on approach to resolve tasks such as pest control and be confident to service and operate machinery if required for a task or project.

Experience Required

  • Established as self-employed
  • Experienced gardener and grounds person with proven experience working for a private household or estate
  • A genuine efficient, hard worker who takes pride in their results
  • Comfortable working independently and managing your own time
  • Happy to get stuck in with all aspects of a large country property
  • A background in farming or rural grounds management would be a great fit
  • Formal qualifications (RHS or otherwise) are desirable but experience accompanied with a willing, positive attitude and strong work ethic are equally strong

If this sounds like you, we look forward to receiving your application.
