Full job description

We are seeking a reliable, hardworking, and enthusiastic Gardener to help maintain and develop a large rural property and surrounding grounds based in Wylam, Northumberland. This is a varied, hands-on, outdoor role suited to someone who enjoys practical work and takes pride in maintaining high standards across gardens, lawns, landscaped areas, and general estate grounds.

The successful candidate will assist with the ongoing care and presentation of the property throughout the seasons, working independently and as part of a wider team.

Responsibilities

  • Carry out general garden and grounds maintenance, including mowing, strimming, hedge cutting, pruning, weeding, and watering
  • Maintain lawns, borders, pathways, driveways, paddocks, and outdoor areas to a high standard
  • Plant and care for flowers, shrubs, trees, and seasonal planting schemes
  • Assist with rural planting areas where required
  • Operate and maintain gardening machinery and equipment including mowers, hedge trimmers, strimmers, chainsaws, and hand tools
  • Ensure all tools, machinery, and storage areas are kept clean, safe, and organised
  • Assist with fencing, leaf clearance, composting, mulching, and other seasonal estate duties
  • Support ongoing landscaping and improvement projects across the property
  • Work safely in all weather conditions while following health and safety procedures

Requirements

  • Previous gardening, groundskeeping, landscaping, or estate maintenance experience preferred
  • Good practical knowledge of plants, lawn care, pruning, and seasonal garden maintenance
  • Confident using gardening tools, machinery, and outdoor equipment
  • Ability to work independently with good time management
  • Strong work ethic and attention to detail
  • Physically fit and comfortable working outdoors year-round
  • A full UK driving licence is desirable due to the rural location

Ideal Candidate

The ideal candidate will be dependable, self-motivated, and passionate about outdoor work. Experience working on country estates, farms, hotels, or large private properties would be advantageous but is not essential.

Pay: From £12.71 per hour
