The Opportunity

We are looking for a passionate and dedicated Support Worker / Horticultural Worker to join our team. This unique role blends horticultural expertise with person-centred support, helping individuals with learning disabilities actively participate in gardening activities that promote independence and well-being.

An understanding of and commitment to organic growing methods is desirable for this position.

Key Responsibilities

Horticultural Activities:

· Facilitate engaging horticultural sessions tailored to participants’ abilities.

· Maintain and cultivate plants, manage large polytunnels, and care for green spaces using organic horticultural techniques.

· Teach fundamental gardening skills, including planting, watering, weeding, and harvesting.

· Foster a supportive, inclusive, and encouraging atmosphere to promote engagement and enjoyment.

Individualized Support:

· Provide personalized one-on-one and group support, adapting methods to individual learning styles.

· Assist participants in understanding instructions, staying focused, and developing independence in gardening tasks.

· Encourage self-confidence and resilience while offering empathetic support.

· Monitor progress and adjust activities to ensure meaningful learning experiences.

Health & Safety:

· Ensure the safety and well-being of all participants during horticultural sessions.

· Educate individuals on the proper and safe use of gardening tools and equipment.

· Maintain clean, organized, and hazard-free workspaces, including storage areas.

· Comply with all relevant health and safety regulations.

Documentation & Reporting:

· Keep accurate records of attendance, progress, and achievements.

· Document incidents, concerns, or relevant observations.

· Provide reports and updates to supervisors and stakeholders as needed.

Qualifications & Skills

Essential:

✔ Proven experience in horticulture, particularly organic vegetable production.
✔ Genuine enthusiasm for organic growing and sustainable practices.
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with patience and empathy.
✔ Ability to work independently and collaboratively.
✔ Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
✔ Knowledge of health and safety best practices in horticultural environments.
Full UK Driving Licence and willingness to undertake transport duties using small minibuses.

Desirable:

➤ Experience supporting individuals with learning disabilities or similar needs.
➤ Understanding of diverse learning styles and adaptive teaching strategies.
➤ Certifications or training in horticulture, special education, or disability support services.

Working Conditions

Outdoor-based role with exposure to varied weather conditions.
Some physical activity required, including lifting/carrying gardening materials and equipment.
Occasional flexibility in working hours to meet program needs.
Transport duties, including driving small minibuses, are required.
