In a nutshell…

As Facilities Assistant your focus will be on looking after our buildings, the grounds and our vehicles and equipment. You’ll be part of the team who make sure all young people at Outward Bound have the right equipment for their adventure and learning course, as well as providing a safe, secure and homely environment back at centre.

Here’s a bit more detail…
You’ll work with other facilities functions and will report to our Head of Facilities. You’ll:

  • Primarily perform general maintenance tasks on our grounds (2-3 days per week) but also provide assistance with general maintenance on our buildings (plumbing, electrics, woodwork), boats, road vehicles and student equipment.
  • Work with our Head of Facilities to make sure that our buildings, grounds, vehicles and equipment comply to national legal frameworks and Outward Bound’s own procedures.
  • Notice, report and make safe any health and safety concerns.
  • Record maintenance activities and statutory legal requirements.
  • Role model safety in all areas of operations.
  • Work with our Adventure Resource Co-ordinator to issue equipment to students and staff and to perform stock and compliance checks on equipment and personal protective equipment.
  • Help wider Outward Bound teams on programmes through:

- Transporting students to and from activity locations

- Supporting programme objectives (e.g. employability and environmental themes)

  • Work with specialist contractors to provide support when required.
  • Deputise for the Head of Facilities in their absence where appropriate including responding to facilities issues, which on occasion, may be out of hours
  • Train other staff where appropriate.
  • Attend toolbox talks, team meetings and site meetings.

Person specification

Skills and knowledge

You’ll need:

  • General maintenance skills knowledge and experience (essential). LANTRA awards, trade person qualifications and health and safety qualifications are all desirable.
  • A full driving licence (essential). Having or being willing to get a D1 entitlement is desirable.
  • Experience with Microsoft Office programmes (email and Excel) is desirable.
  • Working unsupervised.
  • Working as part of a team.
  • Facilities engineering and/or property management.

  • Able to communicate effectively with young people and Outward Bound staff and visitors.

Salary and benefits

Starting salary £24,960.00 (dependent on relevant experience) for a 40-hour week.

  • Annual leave of 24 days, plus bank holidays (increasing by a day each year to a maximum of 30 days +BH).
  • Life Assurance: 3 x salary, covered from start date; includes Employee Assistance helpline. 8 weeks’ sick pay at full salary, in a rolling 12 months.
  • Long-term Disability Insurance: 2/3 salary less state incapacity benefit after 6 months’ absence for up to 5 years, covered from start date.
