Location: London Gateway, Essex
Hours: Monday to Friday, 6:00am – 4:00pm
Salary: Competitive (dependent on experience) + Company Benefits

About the Role

We are seeking an experienced General Manager to lead our busy London Gateway transport operation. This is a senior operational role responsible for the day-to-day management of approximately 40 HGVs operating within the deep-sea container sector.

The successful candidate will take full ownership of the depot, ensuring vehicles are planned efficiently, drivers are managed professionally, and the operation remains fully compliant with all Operator Licence and DVSA requirements.

The role is based Monday to Friday, 6:00am to 4:00pm, providing leadership during the core operational hours while ensuring effective forward planning for the following day.

This is an excellent opportunity for an ambitious Transport Manager who enjoys running an operation, leading people, and driving continuous improvements.

Key Responsibilities - Operational Management

  • Overall responsibility for the daily running of the depot.
  • Forward planning and scheduling of approximately 40 HGVs.
  • Ensure maximum vehicle utilisation, productivity and profitability.
  • Manage daily transport operations, reacting quickly to operational changes.
  • Monitor vehicle performance, idle time, empty running and operational efficiency.
  • Deliver excellent customer service through proactive operational management.

Planning & Fleet Utilisation

  • Produce effective forward plans to maximise fleet utilisation.
  • Work closely with day planners to optimise routes, collections and deliveries.
  • Ensure drivers' hours are utilised efficiently while remaining fully compliant.
  • Identify operational improvements and implement more efficient planning processes.
  • Monitor daily KPIs including truck revenue, utilisation and service performance.

Transport Compliance

  • Hold full responsibility as the depot's CPC-qualified Transport Manager.
  • Ensure compliance with Operator Licence undertakings.
  • Maintain full compliance with Drivers' Hours Regulations, Working Time Directive, Tachograph legislation, vehicle maintenance requirements, driver licence and CPC checks, OCRS performance, and DVSA and Traffic Commissioner requirements.
  • Investigate and resolve compliance issues promptly.
  • Prepare the depot for internal and external compliance audits.

Driver Management

  • Act as the primary point of contact for all depot drivers.
  • Recruit, interview and onboard new drivers.
  • Manage driver performance, attendance and conduct.
  • Carry out return-to-work meetings, investigations and disciplinary procedures where required.
  • Support, coach and develop drivers to maintain high standards.
  • Build and maintain a reliable pool of permanent drivers to minimise agency reliance.

Team Leadership

  • Lead and support the depot's planning team.
  • Manage the performance and development of day planners.
  • Ensure planning standards are consistently achieved.
  • Promote a positive, accountable and high-performing team culture.
  • Report operational performance to senior management.

Essential Requirements

  • National or International Transport Manager CPC (Essential).
  • Significant experience within deep sea container haulage.
  • Proven experience planning container transport operations.
  • Strong understanding of UK ports, terminals and shipping line procedures.
  • Excellent knowledge of TOPS or similar transport management systems.
  • Thorough understanding of Drivers' Hours and Transport Compliance.
  • Previous experience managing planners and HGV drivers.
  • Strong leadership and people management skills.
  • Excellent organisational and problem-solving ability.
  • Commercial awareness with a focus on operational efficiency.
  • Ability to work under pressure in a fast-paced transport environment.

Desirable

  • Experience managing a transport depot.
  • Knowledge of London Gateway, Tilbury, Purfleet and surrounding port operations.
  • Experience delivering operational KPI reporting.
  • Experience recruiting and building transport teams.
  • Knowledge of container haulage legislation and industry best practice.

What We're Looking For

We are looking for a hands-on operational leader who can take ownership of a busy transport depot. You will be equally comfortable planning trucks, managing drivers, leading planners, and ensuring the operation remains fully compliant.

You will be someone who enjoys improving efficiency, developing people, solving operational challenges, and leading by example.

If you have the experience, leadership skills and commercial mindset to manage a successful container transport operation, we would like to hear from you.

Pay: £45,000.00-£60,000.00 per year

Benefits:

  • Company pension
  • Free parking
  • On-site parking
