Hurstpierpoint College is a successful independent school, and a significant medium-sized enterprise in mid- Sussex with approximately 480 employees and a turnover of some £35 million pa. It is both a stimulating and a pleasant place in which to work. The College is amongst the most successful independent schools in Sussex. It is co-educational and comprises a Senior School, Senior Prep School and Junior Prep School with close to 1,300 pupils in all. Over half the pupils in the Senior School are boarders (weekly or flexible).

Role Summary

The jobholder reports directly to the Estates Manager, who is responsible for the day-to-day maintenance of the

College buildings and management of the Estates Team which this post is part of.

The primary function of the jobholder will be to provide a comprehensive electrical infrastructure service including minor repairs, installations and building work, interior and exterior fixtures in all parts of the College and residential properties. In addition, the jobholder will be expected to assist other members of the team, as required by undertaking a variety of repairs, maintenance, and project work, to provide high quality, ‘right first time’, cost effective building services to the College and on occasions to other local Hurst Education Trust Schools.

Principal Responsibilities

These include, but are not limited to:

1. To carry out electrical work around the whole school campus in a competent manner, to include consumer unit changes, electrical rewires, wiring/distribution board upgrades, minor works projects and fault finding.

2. To work cohesively with the incumbent campus electrician, observing and assisting in the prioritisation of works according to need.

3. To undertake training as necessary to further develop career progression.

4. To assist and manage the ongoing emergency lighting and LED upgrade programme.

5. To be fully conversant with all aspects of electrical installation works of both 230v and 400v.

6. To carry out periodic inspection and testing around the whole campus completing the necessary test certification in accordance with IEE wiring regulations. To complete other electrical certification as required.

7. To always ensure compliance with IEE Wiring Regulations and that appropriate materials and practices are used.

8. To undertake testing of all portable and fixed electrical equipment as required (PAT Testing).

9. To liaise with customers and arrange access times to discuss works.

10. To carry out and complete all works to a high standard and in a competent manner and ensure areas are left clean and tidy.

11. To work as part of a team with other trades and sub-contractors as necessary to ensure the timely completion of works within agreed operational targets.

12. To respond to staff / department and Estates Management requests for general repairs and installations on the facilities management system (Parago) and by email as necessary.

13. Working on listed buildings sympathetically using traditional and historic materials as required.

14. Assemble scaffold tower or other access equipment (training provided), taking Health & Safety considerations and College schedules into account.

15. Plan and co-ordinate work with other trades and academic staff as required.

16. Check equipment is safe to use and clean after use as necessary.

17. To ensure that any statutory qualifications and re-training are kept up to date and remain valid.

18. To attend meetings and training sessions when required.

19. To attend out of hours and emergencies when required.

20. To always act in accordance with the college policies and procedures and financial regulations. To observe and comply with the college Health and Safety Policies and procedures. To understand risk assessments and method statements.

21. To carry out any other duties that are appropriate to the post.

22. In line with the schools Health & Safety Policy at Work Act 1974, you have a duty to take care for your own health and safety and that of others. In addition, to this you must be able to follow risk assessments and safe systems of work.

23. To keep up to date on new products and equipment and advise the Estates Manager where required on specifications and project planning.

Other points:

Desirable Criteria • PASMA Certification. • IPAF Certification.

Experience of working on commercial contracts (schools, hospitals, hotels etc.).

For both interior and exterior works, may be required to work from fixed or mobile scaffolding.
