About the Role:

Acumen Claims Ltd is experiencing rapid growth and is seeking an experienced Building Surveyor to join our team. This role requires a skilled professional with experience in building pathology, in depth knowledge of domestic and commercial construction, building claims validation, project management and customer service. The successful candidate will oversee domestic and commercial building claims from validation through to completion of repair projects, ensuring consistent and high-quality service delivery.

The successful applicant will have the opportunity to work with a range of stakeholders including policyholders, insurers, brokers, freeholders, leaseholders, tenants and supply chain to manage claims effectively and efficiently.

The successful applicant must be an experienced property surveyor, preferable with insurance experience. This role will cover the North of England.

Key Responsibilities:

General Perils:

  • Claim Evaluation: Review all information from clients and claim handlers and conduct detailed site visits to validate claims for policy coverage and scope.
  • Customer Interaction: Communicate with policyholders to gather additional information and inform them of policy liability and scope decisions.
  • Claim Validation: Use company tools to create repair schedules and validate variations requests based on policy terms. Be able to interpret policy wordings and apply insurer claims’ handling philosophies and guidelines
  • Project Management: Oversee the entire claim process, from damage assessment, validation, repair scheduling, fulfilment to final report submission.
  • Compliance: Ensure all processes comply with company policies, procedures, and Health & Safety legislation.
  • Contractor Management: Appoint relevant contractors (e.g., asbestos, drying and restoration specialists, building contractors, etc) and provide clear instructions from the outset of the claim. Manage contractor performance on individuals claims, ensuring compliance with repair specifications, policyholder communication and liaison with other relevant suppliers
  • Claim Support: Provide technical support to claims handlers and other team members as required.

Ideally candidates should have experience of dealing with Subsidence claims:

  • Initial Assessment: Conduct site assessments.
  • Policy Decision: Determine claim liability based on policy details and site findings.
  • Reporting: Prepare client reports, repair schedules, and submit them within the agreed time frame.
  • Site Investigations and Diagnosis: Arrange further investigations (e.g., trial pits, boreholes) when needed.
  • Damage Mitigation: Drainage analysis, vegetation management, soil rehydration or preventative measures.
  • Repair Design: Create repair methodologies that minimise disruption and align with the customer’s needs and claim cost.
  • Site Meetings: Attend site visits for complex claims, project management or complaints.

Key Skills and Competencies:

  • Technical Expertise: Extensive experience in building pathology, building claims, damage assessment, project management and reinstatement work.
  • Communication: Strong verbal and written communication skills with the ability to write detailed reports.
  • Resilience and Adaptability: Ability to work under pressure, handle complex claims and work additional hours during busy periods.
  • Problem-Solving: A proactive approach to identifying issues and finding effective solutions.
  • Organisation and Planning: Ability to manage multiple claims, meet deadlines and ensure client-specific service levels are adhered to.

Preferred Qualifications and experience:

  • Membership of CIOB or equivalent professional body (RICS, CILA)
  • Degree in Building Surveying or Construction
  • Strong background in domestic and commercial building claims validation and project management.
