Full job description

Job Title: Carpenter / General Builder
Location: Nonsuch Estate, Bromham, Wiltshire, SN15 2ED
Day Rate: Competitive – Freelance / Contract

About the Project:
Nonsuch House is a Grade II* Listed country house that suffered extensive fire damage in 2021. We’re now breathing new life into the estate, restoring the house and grounds and converting it into a boutique hotel and farmstay that honours the building’s history while embracing thoughtful modern design.

This is not your average site — it’s a long-term, high-quality project with a strong emphasis on craftsmanship, attention to detail, and doing things properly.

The Role:
We’re looking for a skilled carpenter with general building experience to join our site team. While your core skillset will be in carpentry, you’ll also be expected to turn your hand to a range of practical building tasks — including drylining, insulation, basic plasterboarding, and small-scale structural work.

We’re after someone dependable, adaptable, and proud of their work — the kind of person who can be left to get on with it, and who notices when something needs doing.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Carry out first and second fix carpentry to a high standard
  • Assist with general building work including drylining, boarding, framing, and occasional demolition or prep tasks
  • Work sensitively within a historic, listed building environment
  • Collaborate with other trades on site and contribute to problem-solving
  • Interpret drawings and adapt to the unique quirks of working on an old building
  • Keep a tidy, well-organised working environment

About You:

  • Broad experience across carpentry and general building
  • Comfortable working on heritage projects or with non-standard structures
  • Takes pride in doing things right, not just quickly
  • Reliable, proactive, and easy to work with
  • Own tools and transport preferred
  • Based within a reasonable distance of Bromham, Wiltshire

What We Offer:

  • A long-term role on a one-of-a-kind project
  • A calm, respectful site culture with a focus on quality
  • Competitive day rate, depending on experience
  • Flexibility on working days/hours where needed
