About you

Exciting opportunities are available for qualified General Medicine Physicians (Senior Medical Officers) who want to make a positive impact while working in a dynamic, multidisciplinary, and supportive team. We are looking for General Medicine Physicians who are passionate about delivering quality care to our patients.

General Medicine in New Zealand focuses on the comprehensive diagnosis, treatment, and ongoing management of adult patients with complex or multisystem conditions. It plays a central role in hospital care across all district sizes—from large tertiary centres to regional and rural hospitals. General Physicians often provide broad-based internal medicine care and work closely with subspecialists or practise in dual roles, managing both general medical admissions and care within a particular subspecialty.

Positions are available across New Zealand with immediate start dates, or you can speak with our recruitment team about your plans to move to New Zealand.

To work as a General Medicine Physician (Senior Medical Officer) in New Zealand, you must become registered to practice with the Medical Council of New Zealand. Practitioners must meet competency standards and hold Annual Practising Certificates (APCs) to work safely and effectively. More information can be found on our careers site; search for 'General Medicine’.

Call New Zealand home

Once offered a position, our Health Immigration team can provide free support to you and your family with immigrating to New Zealand. Senior Medical Officers are on Tier 1 of New Zealand's Green List, which means you are eligible for the Straight to Residence Visa and can apply for New Zealand residency before you arrive.

One of the best things about living and working in New Zealand is the opportunity to experience nature, outdoor adventure and vibrant cities close to where you live and work. You're never far away from your next adventure in New Zealand with access to hiking, skiing, mountain biking, water sports, fine dining, and diving into traditional experiences to learn more about Māori culture across the country.

Salary and benefits

Senior Medical Officers receive 6 weeks of annual leave and 12 paid public holidays, giving you time to explore our beautiful country and raise a family in our diverse communities. Along with your base salary as a Senior Medical Officer, you will have an annual Continuing Medical Education (CME) allowance of GB £7,000 (NZ $16,000) (pro-rated for part-time employees), reimbursement of your registration and practising certificate fees and your professional indemnity insurance is covered by Health New Zealand.

Senior Medical Officers receive a base salary relative to their level of experience.

  • Medical Officers annual salaries range GB £62K - GB £92K (NZ $142K - NZ $210K) plus allowances.
  • Medical Specialists annual salaries range GB £81K - GB £117K (NZ $185K - NZ $267K) plus allowances.

Additional allowances are paid on top of base salary and vary due to location and service.
