Construction Estimator – General Building & Heritage

Location: Wickford, Essex
Employment: Full-time, Permanent
Salary: Competitive package + bonus

The Role

Due to continued growth, Universal Stone is looking for an experienced Construction Estimator to join our team, focusing on general building, heritage, restoration and refurbishment projects.

The successful candidate will have a strong background in UK construction estimating, with proven experience managing tender packages independently from initial enquiry through to final pricing and submission.

You will be responsible for preparing detailed cost estimates, coordinating subcontractor and supplier quotations, assessing commercial risks and producing accurate, competitive tenders within agreed deadlines.

This is an opportunity to take ownership of the estimating process within an established business, with the potential to progress into an Estimating Manager role as the department develops.

This is a fully office-based position in Wickford, Essex. Remote, home-based and hybrid working are not available. Candidates must be able to attend the office reliably and should ideally live within a 20–30 minute commute of our Wickford office.

Key Responsibilities

  • Review and interpret drawings, specifications, bills of quantities and tender documentation
  • Prepare detailed cost estimates for general building, heritage and refurbishment works
  • Manage tender packages from initial review through to final pricing and submission
  • Obtain, analyse and compare quotations from subcontractors and suppliers
  • Assess materials, labour, plant, preliminaries and installation methods
  • Identify scope gaps, exclusions, commercial risks and potential opportunities
  • Liaise with clients, consultants, subcontractors and suppliers to clarify requirements and obtain competitive pricing
  • Prepare accurate tender breakdowns and supporting documentation
  • Ensure tenders are commercially sound, complete and submitted within deadlines
  • Support the handover of successful tenders to the project delivery team
  • Contribute to the development of estimating systems and processes
  • Definitive & detailed reporting to senior management and Directors

About You

You will have:

  • A minimum of four years' UK-based construction estimating experience
  • Strong experience in general building or main contractor estimating
  • Strong understanding of and monitoring of ‘Prime’ costs within the market
  • Ability to ‘Prime Cost’ building works from scratch
  • Proven experience managing tender packages, preparing and submitting complete tenders independently
  • The ability to interpret construction drawings, specifications and bills of quantities
  • Experience obtaining and analysing subcontractor and supplier quotations
  • Strong commercial awareness, numeracy and attention to detail
  • Excellent organisational and communication skills, with the ability to manage multiple tenders and meet deadlines
  • A proactive, methodical approach and the ability to work on your own initiative
  • A full, valid UK driving licence
  • The ability to commute reliably to our Wickford office, ideally from within a 20–30 minute travelling distance

Experience in heritage restoration, conservation, natural stone or specialist construction packages would be an advantage but is not essential for a candidate with strong general building estimating experience.

What We Offer

  • Competitive salary package, dependent on experience
  • Bonus scheme
  • Long-term career opportunity within an established business
  • Exposure to a varied range of general building, heritage and specialist construction projects
  • The opportunity to take ownership of tenders and contribute to the growth of the estimating function
  • Potential progression into an Estimating Manager role
