Description
Location: Cambridge, UK - This is a hybrid role, with a minimum of two days per week (Tuesday and Wednesday) in our Cambridge office. Applicants should be based (or willing to relocate) within a comfortable commuting distance of our office to attend onsite as required.
Are you an experienced corporate and commercial lawyer with a love for video games? We're looking for a Legal Counsel to bring corporate governance rigour and commercial sharpness to one of gaming's most enduring studios.
This is a varied role with real ownership. You’ll help keep Jagex’s corporate foundations strong while also working closely with teams across the business on commercial initiatives, player-facing projects, regulatory matters, and the legal frameworks that support our games, partnerships, and operations.
The opportunity here is breadth, impact, and proximity to the business. You’ll be part of a close-knit in-house team where your advice will directly support decision-making across commercial, corporate, regulatory, and operational matters. Alongside core legal work, you’ll also have the chance to contribute to the development of better legal processes, improved ways of working, and the responsible use of legal technologies, including AI.
This is a great opportunity for an experienced corporate and commercial solicitor who wants to move beyond narrow specialism and build a broad, hands-on legal career within a thriving video games business. There's also a future opportunity to progress into a formal Company Secretary appointment as you grow with us.
What you’ll be doing:
- Own and support key corporate governance activity across the Jagex group, keeping the business compliant as it scales.
- Administer Jagex's management incentive plan alongside our Chief People Officer, managing approvals for new joiners and leavers.
- Draft, review and negotiate commercial agreements spanning sponsorship, partnerships, licensing and merchandising, so our biggest deals land cleanly.
- Support live events and commercial partnerships hands-on, including matters like event visas and immigration, so you see your legal work come to life.
- Advise across the business on commercial, regulatory and corporate matters, helping teams navigate an evolving regulatory landscape with confidence.
- Help shape the future of Jagex's legal function, including the responsible rollout of legal technology and AI tools.
What we’re looking for:
- Qualified solicitor in England and Wales, with a qualifying law degree or equivalent legal qualification.
- Experienced solicitor 3 - 5 years PQE, with demonstrable experience across corporate governance and commercial legal work.
- Demonstrable experience handling corporate governance requirements for a large UK company, including filings, statutory records, approvals, minutes, resolutions, and supporting documentation.
- Experience managing, advising on, or administering management or employee incentive schemes, including relevant approvals and stakeholder coordination.
- Proven experience drafting and negotiating commercial agreements, including partnerships, licensing, and technology contracts.
- Clear understanding of intellectual property rights, including their exploitation, protection, and use within licensing or similar commercial arrangements.
- Working knowledge of UK and EU GDPR requirements, with awareness of equivalent data protection regulations in other jurisdictions.
- Awareness of the legal, commercial, and regulatory issues affecting the video games industry, with in-house experience in gaming, technology, entertainment, or another dynamic consumer-facing sector preferred but not essential.
What we offer:
When you join Jagex you can look forward to a generous Perks & Benefits package including:
- Private Healthcare, including Dental Plan.
- Discretionary annual performance bonus.
- Minimum 6% Pension contributions.
- Life Insurance.
- Enhanced family leave policies from day 1.
- Flexible working hours.
- 25 days annual leave + Bank holidays & the option to buy/sell holidays + so much more!
Right to Work Statement
This role is only open to applicants who have the permanent right to work in the UK. We are unable to provide or take over visa sponsorship for this position, either now or in the future. Applicants must therefore be able to demonstrate their ongoing eligibility to work in the UK without the need for employer sponsorship.
Inclusion & Accessibility Statement
We are committed to providing equal opportunities and creating an environment where everyone can thrive. We welcome applications from all backgrounds, and we recruit, develop, and promote based on merit and ability.
If you require any reasonable adjustments to support you during the recruitment process, please let us know when you’re invited to interview.
