Overview

General Builder / Multi-Trade Operative

We are looking for a genuine all-rounder — an experienced tradesperson who is happiest with tools in hand and has picked up a broad range of skills across a long career in construction.

This is a hands-on role. You will spend your week on the tools, delivering a wide mix of construction and refurbishment work yourself. You will also lead sites and manage a small team, keeping them pointed in the right direction, making sensible calls when something on site doesn't match the drawings, and being the person others turn to when they're unsure how to tackle something.

If you enjoy variety, take pride in a job finished properly, and would rather solve a problem than raise a query about it, this role will suit you well.

What you'll be doing

On the tools

• Carrying out a wide mix of construction and refurbishment work across domestic and commercial projects across Dorset
• First and second fix carpentry — studwork, floors, roofs, doors, skirtings, architraves, kitchen fitting
• Brickwork, blockwork and general masonry repairs
• Groundworks, drainage, concreting and slab preparation
• Plastering, rendering, drylining, taping and jointing
• Roofing repairs, guttering, fascias and soffits
• Basic plumbing and electrical first fix, working alongside qualified trades for final connections and certification
• Tiling, decorating and general finishing work
• Alterations, structural openings, propping and making good
• Snagging and putting right defects to a high standard
• Safe use and basic maintenance of plant, power tools and access equipment

Leading the site

• Running the site day to day and setting out the work for a small team (typically 2–5 operatives and subcontractors)
• Showing less experienced team members how a job should be done
• Checking work against drawings and specifications and flagging discrepancies early
• Keeping the site tidy, safe and secure, and carrying out basic site inductions
• Ordering and receiving materials, and keeping an eye on waste
• Liaising with the contracts manager, clients and other trades in a straightforward, professional manner
• Completing simple site paperwork — timesheets, delivery notes, brief daily updates, toolbox talks

What we're looking for

Essential

• Substantial hands-on experience in the construction industry
• Competence across at least three trades, with a good working knowledge of several more
• Experience leading a site and managing a small team
• Full UK driving licence
• Your own van and your own tools
• Sound understanding of site health and safety, and a genuine commitment to working safely
• Ability to read and work from drawings and specifications
• Reliable, self-motivated and able to organise your own day without close supervision
• Good communicator who can get the best out of a small team

Desirable

• SSSTS or SMSTS
• CSCS card
• First Aid at Work certificate
• Asbestos awareness, abrasive wheels, working at height or PASMA / IPAF tickets
• Formal qualification in a core trade (NVQ Level 2/3, City & Guilds or time-served apprenticeship)
• Experience across both new build and refurbishment
• Experience working in occupied properties and dealing directly with clients
