Full job description
At NHS Property Services, our people are at the heart of everything we do. We are committed to maintaining safe, efficient, and sustainable healthcare environments that support patients, staff, and visitors across the NHS estate.
We now have an exciting opportunity for a skilled, customer-focused and reliable Maintenance Operative (Multi-Skilled) to join our Estates team. This is a fantastic opportunity for someone with strong plumbing and general maintenance experience who enjoys solving problems, delivering excellent customer service, and making a tangible difference every day.
About the Role
As a Maintenance Operative, you will be responsible for delivering both planned and reactive maintenance across a diverse portfolio of NHS properties. Working as part of a dedicated Estates team, you will undertake a variety of maintenance tasks to ensure our buildings remain safe, compliant, operational, and fit for purpose.
This is a varied hands-on role where you will use your plumbing expertise alongside broader maintenance skills to diagnose faults, complete repairs, and maintain the high standards expected across our healthcare estate. You'll work closely with colleagues, contractors, and customers to ensure an excellent service is delivered at all times.
Who You Are
You are a practical and adaptable maintenance professional who takes pride in delivering high-quality workmanship. You enjoy working independently, managing your own workload and finding effective solutions to maintenance issues while maintaining a strong focus on customer service and safety.
Key Responsibilities
- Carrying out planned and reactive maintenance activities across a range of NHS properties.
- Undertaking plumbing repairs including taps, toilets, drainage issues, leaks, and pipework maintenance.
- Completing minor repairs across multiple trades including carpentry, painting and decorating, basic electrical works, and general fabric maintenance.
- Identifying faults and carrying out repairs efficiently, safely, and to a high standard.
- Conducting routine building inspections and reporting defects or health and safety concerns.
- Maintaining accurate records of completed work using company systems.
- Participating in the on-call rota where required.
- Building effective working relationships with customers and colleagues while delivering excellent customer service in occupied healthcare environments.
- Supporting compliance and ensuring all work is carried out in line with company policies and health and safety requirements.
What We're Looking For
Essential Requirements
- NVQ Level 2 qualification.
- Evidence of relevant qualifications and certifications.
- Experience within a building maintenance, facilities management, construction, or property maintenance environment.
- Strong plumbing maintenance knowledge and experience.
- Carpentry and general fabric maintenance skills.
- Ability to undertake a variety of maintenance tasks beyond your core trade.
- Excellent customer service and communication skills.
- Good understanding of health and safety practices.
- Full UK Driving Licence.
Desirable
- Experience working within healthcare, public sector, or commercial property environments.
- Knowledge of compliance requirements within building maintenance.
- Experience working within a multi-disciplinary estates team.
- Additional trade qualifications.
Where You'll Be
This is a mobile role covering Biggleswade, Bedford and Luton, working across a range of NHS properties. A full UK Driving Licence is required.
What We Can Offer You
We understand how important life is outside of work, so as well as a competitive salary starting from £30,000, we also offer:
- 27 days annual leave plus 8 bank holidays.
- NHS Pension Scheme.
- Learning and development opportunities through our Professional Excellence Framework.
- Employee Assistance Programme.
- Cycle to Work Scheme.
- NHS retail discounts.
- Career development opportunities across a national organisation.
- A supportive team environment where you can grow and develop your skills.
An Organisation with a Purpose
We are an organisation with a passion for giving back. Putting money back into the NHS, supporting our communities, and working towards our commitment to become net zero carbon by 2050, we ensure every colleague has the opportunity to make a meaningful difference.
At NHS Property Services, we're committed to creating an inclusive workplace where everyone can thrive. We welcome applications from disabled people and will make reasonable adjustments throughout the recruitment process and in the workplace to support your needs. If you require any support or adjustments, please let us know. We're here to help.
We celebrate diversity and are working hard to create an environment where people love to work and can fulfil their potential.
We encourage applications as soon as possible, as vacancies may close early if we receive a high volume of suitable applications.
