Job Title: School Caretaker

Job Purpose

To be responsible for the effective supervision, security and operation of the premises.

Key Tasks

1. Security of premises and key holding.

2. Ensuring the satisfactory heating of the premises and the economic use of fuel for heating purposes.

3. Replacing (to a safe height) electric lamps and tubes.

4. Porterage duties.

5. Laying out, clearing and stacking furniture.

6. General handyperson duties.

7. Replenishment of supplies and stock taking of cleaning materials.

8. Making arrangements and preparing for school events and other after hours use as and when decided by the Head and Governing Body – subject to reasonable notice being given.

9. Making arrangements for emergency maintenance outside normal office hours.

10. Recording and reporting defects to responsible person.

11. Regular gas/electricity/water meter readings.

12. Cleaning and maintenance of external areas.

Leaves – seasonally

Litter/broken glass – daily as needs arise

Power-hosing the playgrounds

Grass cutting

13. Treatment of pathways and steps with salt, grit and sand during periods of ice and snow.

14. Clearing of drains and gulleys; cleaning of kitchen grease traps.

15. Collecting litter from high fire risk areas.

16. Checking of emergency exit doors – ease of opening.

17. External inspection of buildings from ground level, looking for early warning of problems with rainwater spouts etc.

18. Building maintenance tasks (examples but not exhaustive)

a) Checking (to a safe height) spouts and downspouts

b) Clearing outlets on single story flat roofs where there is internal access

c) Minor maintenance of site fencing

d) Weekly fire checks

e) Legionella testing

19. Minor painting and decorating.

20. Available for duty and accepting responsibility during periods when contractors and suppliers need to be on site – subject to reasonable notice being given.

21. Monitoring standards of internal cleanliness of buildings by reference to cleaning specification; reporting unacceptable cleaning standards to the Headteacher.

22. Cover of cleaning duties during staff absences.

23. Attend training courses as appropriate to the role.

24. Other duties in support of the school as decided by the Headteacher.

Job Type: Part-time

Pay: £13.91 per hour

Expected hours: 15.0 – 20.0 per week
