Overview

Multi-Trade Construction Tutor

CTSW Skills | Plymouth

Salary: £27,000–£29,000 per annum

Term-time working – 11 weeks off per year!

Are you an experienced tradesperson looking for a new challenge and a better work-life balance?

Do you have a strong background in carpentry, property maintenance or general building, and enjoy passing on your skills to others?

At CTSW Skills, we’re looking for a practical, enthusiastic and patient Multi-Trade Construction Tutor to join our growing Construction team.

This is a fantastic opportunity for someone with real industry experience who wants to step away from the demands of site work and use their knowledge to make a genuine difference to young people’s lives.

You don’t necessarily need to be a qualified teacher. We’re particularly interested in finding the right person with the right trade skills, attitude and ability to connect with young people.

About CTSW Skills

CTSW Skills is a training provider with a difference. We believe that education isn’t one-size-fits-all and that every young person deserves the opportunity to succeed.

Many of our learners haven’t had the easiest journey through traditional education. Our approach is practical, supportive and focused on helping young people rediscover their confidence, develop valuable skills and prepare for employment.

We’re proud of our welcoming, inclusive environment and the relationships our staff build with learners. We don’t just teach qualifications – we help young people build futures.

The Role

As a Multi-Trade Construction Tutor, you’ll deliver engaging, hands-on construction training, helping learners develop practical skills, confidence and a positive attitude towards work.

We’re particularly looking for someone with strong carpentry and property maintenance experience, alongside a good working knowledge of other construction trades.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Delivering practical construction sessions across a range of trades, with a particular focus on carpentry, joinery and property maintenance.
  • Teaching essential skills such as measuring, cutting, fixing, fitting, repairs, maintenance and safe use of tools.
  • Supporting learners to develop skills in other areas, such as painting and decorating, basic plumbing, plastering and general building maintenance.
  • Planning engaging, practical activities that make learning enjoyable and relevant to the workplace.
  • Supporting young people with different abilities, learning needs and behavioural challenges.
  • Building positive relationships with learners, encouraging good attendance, behaviour and achievement.
  • Monitoring learner progress, completing assessments and maintaining appropriate records.
  • Maintaining a safe, organised and professional workshop environment.
  • Helping learners develop employability skills, confidence, independence and pride in their work.

What We’re Looking For

Essential:

  • Strong, hands-on experience in the construction industry, ideally with a background in carpentry, joinery or property maintenance.
  • A broad understanding of general building and maintenance tasks.
  • The practical ability to demonstrate construction techniques safely and to a good standard.
  • Patience, enthusiasm and the ability to communicate with young people from a wide range of backgrounds.
  • A positive, approachable attitude and a genuine desire to help others succeed.
  • Good organisational skills and a willingness to complete the paperwork and administration associated with teaching.
  • A commitment to safeguarding, health and safety, and creating an inclusive learning environment.

Desirable, but not essential:

  • A recognised construction trade qualification, ideally Level 2 or above.
  • Previous experience in teaching, training, mentoring or supervising apprentices.
  • A teaching or assessing qualification.
  • Experience supporting young people with additional learning needs, including SEND or SEMH needs.
  • Experience working across multiple construction trades.

Most importantly, we’re looking for the right person. Someone who knows their trade, has a good work ethic, can build positive relationships and genuinely wants to help young people achieve.

What We Offer

  • £27,000–£29,000 annual salary, depending on experience and qualifications.
  • 11 weeks off per year, comprising:
  • 3 × 1-week half-term breaks
  • 4 weeks during the summer
  • 2 weeks at Easter
  • 2 weeks at Christmas
  • A term-time working pattern offering an excellent work-life balance.
  • An opportunity to move away from the physical demands and unpredictability of site work.
  • A supportive and friendly team of experienced construction and education professionals.
  • Opportunities to develop your teaching skills and professional qualifications.
  • A rewarding role where you can see the difference your work makes to young people’s lives.
  • The chance to use your industry experience to inspire the next generation of tradespeople.

Why Join CTSW?

This isn’t just another construction job.

It’s an opportunity to take the skills you’ve developed throughout your career and use them to change someone’s future.

Some of our learners arrive with very little confidence in themselves or their abilities. Seeing them develop practical skills, take pride in their work and realise what they’re capable of is what makes this job so rewarding.

We’re looking for someone who understands that being a great tutor isn’t just about knowing how to do the job – it’s about having the patience, personality and passion to help someone else learn.

Interested?

If you’re an experienced carpenter, property maintenance operative, general builder or multi-skilled tradesperson looking for a rewarding new direction, we’d love to hear from you.

You don’t need to have followed a traditional teaching career. If you’ve got the skills, experience and the right attitude, we want to talk to you.

Apply today and help us build brighter futures at CTSW Skills.

Safeguarding

CTSW Skills is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people. The successful applicant will be required to complete appropriate pre-employment and safeguarding checks, including an enhanced DBS check where applicable.

Pay: £26,500.00-£29,000.00 per year

Benefits:

  • Additional leave
  • Casual dress
  • Company pension
  • Discounted or free food
  • Free parking
  • On-site gym
  • On-site parking
