Head of Corporate Affairs, Media, and Community Relations

Reporting to: Director of Planning and Sustainability


To lead Bristol Airport’s public relations, public affairs and stakeholder engagement activity, in supporting the growth of the Airport. To build positive relationships with a wide range of national, regional and local stakeholders. This includes government, the West of England Combined Authority, North Somerset Council, Parish Councils and the local community.


● Responsibility for developing and implementing a public affairs, community, and communications strategy that aligns with our growth plans and sustainability goals.

● Effectively manage and support the performance of the Corporate Affairs Media, and Community Relations team.

● Proactively build and maintain relationships with MPs, civil servants, special advisers and other influencers to ensure that the interests of Bristol Airport are heard.

● Lead in responding to national policy consultations in collaboration with colleagues within the business.

● Proactively build and maintain relationships with local government on issues including surface access transport, skills and employment, and climate action.

● Engaging with the Airport Operations Association, the Airport Council International, and directly with other airports, on issues of common interest in media activity and responses to policy consultation.

● Guide the administration of the Local Community Fund, with priority given to those communities most affected by airport operations.

● Responsible for the community engagement programme, aligned with the social value goals set out Bristol Airport’s Sustainability Strategy.

This is not intended to be an exhaustive list, and the role holder is expected to undertake any duties reasonably required to fulfil their role and support the business objectives. Additionally, every employee is expected to:

● Educated to degree level (or equivalent), preferably in business, communications, public relations, journalism or related discipline.

● Proven leadership capabilities, experience of managing external agencies and working in virtual/cross-functional teams.

● Strong influencing skills and ability to build strong working relationships and work proactively with colleagues & key contacts.

● Considerable corporate affairs experience to include public relations, government and stakeholder, politics and current affairs, and community engagement.

● Experience of building effective relationships with national government, regional and local authorities to align and achieve shared objectives and plans.

● Strong organisational, planning and prioritisation skills with the ability to juggle multiple challenges and initiatives at any one time and track record of delivery against challenging deadlines.

● Excellent written, verbal communication skills, as well as being comfortable presenting to large audiences, in front of the media, and to senior internal and external stakeholders.

● Experience of operating effectively in a similar environment (operational, 24/7, multiple communications channels) with a creative and pragmatic approach to problem solving, with a strong preference for experience in airports, aviation, transport or major infrastructure projects.

● Proactive and self-motivated, with examples of adding value as both an individual contributor and an active team member.

● A high level of resilience, tenacity, flexibility and enthusiasm.

● Must be willing to work outside normal office hours on occasions when required, to support the 24/7 nature of the business.

● Good understanding of and strong commitment to high standards of health and safety.

● Chartered status (Institute of Public Relations or equivalent).


● Knowledge or strong interest in the aviation or transport sectors

● An understanding of the economy and political landscape of the West of England
