About Leeds University Union

LUU is a long-standing and dynamic charity based at the heart of the University of Leeds campus. They are dedicated to ensuring that every one of their 39,000+ students have the opportunity to love their time at Leeds by providing a supportive, inclusive, and empowering environment.

Since its inception, LUU has worked to represent students' voices and needs, championing their interests and shaping a vibrant student community. They believe in creating a space where students feel heard, supported, and inspired – whether through social connection, personal growth, or active involvement in shaping their own student experience. Their vision is of a thriving, inclusive student body where everyone can reach their full potential and make the most of their time at university.

LUU are proud of their fun, inclusive, and learning-focused culture. Their team is diverse, welcoming, and committed to continuous development. They invest in their people, supporting them to grow within their roles and beyond, and encouraging a spirit of collaboration and curiosity.

About the role

Are you passionate about creating safe and welcoming spaces where everyone can thrive? We are seeking an experienced and proactive Health and Safety Business Partner to take a lead role in shaping and driving a positive safety culture across Leeds University Union (LUU). This is a high-impact, hands-on role where you will act as the organisation’s subject matter expert on health and safety—partnering with teams at all levels to ensure compliance, influence behaviours, and embed best practice in everything we do. From large-scale events to day-to-day operations, you will play a critical role in identifying risks, driving improvements, and ensuring a safe, inclusive environment for our students, staff, and visitors.

You’ll have the autonomy to lead on policy development, deliver engaging training, and influence strategic decision-making, while working closely with university stakeholders and student groups. This is an excellent opportunity for a confident H&S professional who thrives in a dynamic, people-focused environment and wants to make a visible difference.

What you'll Lead & Deliver

  • Lead the development, implementation, and continuous improvement of health & safety policies and procedures in line with UK legislation
  • Ensure compliance through audits, inspections, and risk assessments across facilities, events, and activities
  • Provide expert advice and practical support to managers, student groups, and colleagues
  • Deliver engaging training and promote health & safety awareness across the organisation
  • Investigate incidents and accidents, identify root causes, and drive preventative actions
  • Monitor performance, analyse trends, and report to internal committees and stakeholders
  • Work collaboratively with University teams and external partners to ensure best practice
  • Support safe delivery of student activities, including societies and events
