Assistant Accountant

Location: Salford, Manchester (Office-based)
Hours: Full-time, Permanent – 40 hours per week, Monday to Friday
Salary: £28,000 – £30,000 per annum

About the Role

We are looking for a motivated and experienced Assistant Accountant to join our finance team. This is a varied and hands-on role, ideal for someone with excellent attention to detail who enjoys taking ownership of day-to-day financial processes and working as part of a busy team.

Reporting to the Finance Manager, you will play a key role in ensuring the smooth operation of the finance function, maintaining accurate financial records, supporting payroll, and assisting with month-end processes. Experience using Sage 50 is essential.

Key Responsibilities

As an Assistant Accountant, your responsibilities will include:

  • Managing the purchase ledger, including processing supplier invoices and preparing payment runs.
  • Maintaining the sales ledger, raising invoices, allocating payments, and supporting credit control activities.
  • Processing accounts payable and accounts receivable accurately and within agreed timescales.
  • Completing daily and monthly bank reconciliations.
  • Monitoring and reconciling intercompany transactions.
  • Assisting with cash flow monitoring and maintaining accurate financial records.
  • Supporting the preparation of monthly management information and financial reports.
  • Assisting with payroll preparation and processing, ensuring accuracy and confidentiality.
  • Reconciling supplier statements and resolving account queries promptly.
  • Posting journals and assisting with month-end and year-end accounting activities.
  • Ensuring financial records are maintained in accordance with company procedures and accounting standards.
  • Providing administrative support to the wider finance team as required.

About You

To be successful in this role, you will have:

Essential

  • A minimum of 2 years' experience working within an Accounts role or similar finance role.
  • At least 2 years' experience using Sage 50 Accounts.
  • A solid understanding of purchase ledger, sales ledger, bank reconciliations and general accounting processes.
  • Strong Microsoft Excel and Microsoft Office skills.
  • Excellent numerical accuracy and attention to detail.
  • Strong organisational and time management skills with the ability to prioritise workloads effectively.
  • The ability to work independently as well as collaboratively within a team.
  • A professional and confidential approach when handling sensitive financial information.
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal.

Desirable

  • Experience supporting payroll processing.
  • AAT qualification or currently studying towards AAT.
  • Experience working within a multi-company environment.
