Mackay Grounds Maintenance is looking for a reliable and hardworking Grounds Maintenance Operative to join our small team carrying out commercial grounds and highway maintenance across Devon, Dorset and Somerset.

A full UK manual driving licence is essential because the role includes driving company vehicles between sites. Applicants without a full manual licence will unfortunately not be considered.

The work

We maintain a wide range of commercial and public sites, including business premises, residential developments, amenity areas, roundabouts and roadside locations.

Typical duties include:

• Grass cutting using pedestrian and commercial mowing equipment
• Strimming and brush cutting
• Hedge cutting and general pruning
• Leaf clearance and seasonal vegetation work
• General grounds maintenance
• Working on roundabouts and roadside locations
• Loading, unloading and looking after tools and equipment
• Driving company vehicles between sites

The work is varied, physical and outdoors. You will normally work at a number of different sites and should be comfortable working both as part of a small team and independently when required.

What we're looking for

Applicants should:

• Hold a full UK manual driving licence – essential
• Be reliable, punctual and take pride in doing a good job
• Enjoy practical outdoor work
• Be physically capable of carrying out grounds maintenance duties
• Be able to work effectively as part of a small team and independently when required
• Understand the importance of following safe working practices, site instructions and risk assessments
• Be willing to use the PPE and working methods required by the company
• Be comfortable using powered grounds-maintenance machinery following appropriate training
• Have a good standard of written English and basic numeracy
• Be confident using a smartphone and mobile apps for work purposes, including viewing job information, recording work completed and working times, and taking/uploading photographs
• Be able to provide satisfactory evidence of their right to work in the UK
• Be willing to undergo an appropriate DBS (criminal record) check as part of the recruitment process

Previous grounds maintenance, landscaping, agricultural, estate, highways or similar practical outdoor experience would be an advantage. However, we are also interested in applicants with the right attitude, practical ability and willingness to learn.

IMPORTANT – Hours and weather-dependent working

This is a temporary seasonal casual position, initially available until 31 March 2027.

We carry out grounds maintenance throughout the year and expect regular work to be available. However, this is outdoor work and the amount of work we can offer is heavily dependent upon weather and safe working conditions.

Applicants should understand before applying that work and earnings are not guaranteed from week to week.

During periods of prolonged rain, frost, snow, high winds or other unsuitable conditions, work may need to be reduced, postponed or cancelled.

There may be occasions when no work can be offered for one or more days, or potentially for longer periods during particularly poor weather.

There are no guaranteed minimum hours or days of work and no guaranteed level of weekly earnings.

When work is available, workers provide their availability and are free to accept or decline individual offers of work.

The amount and pattern of work offered may also vary according to daylight, seasonal conditions, customer requirements and the operational needs of the business.

Our normal working day starts from our Axminster base at 8.00am.

The position is currently intended to run until 31 March 2027. Any opportunity for further work after that date would depend upon the requirements of the business at the time and is not guaranteed.

Pay and equipment

£13.00 per hour plus 12.07% rolled-up holiday pay.

PAYE.

Company vehicles, commercial machinery, PPE and branded workwear are provided as required.
