Gardener / Senior Gardener – Gardening & Estate Maintenance
Salary: £28,000.00–£30,000.00 per year, depending on experience
McNaughton's, a multi award-winning Landscaping, Gardening and Estate Maintenance company based in East Sussex, has a wonderful opportunity for a professional, enthusiastic and hard-working individual to join our team.
McNaughton's have won multiple RHS awards for our work at the Chelsea Flower Show and are members of BALI. We are looking for an individual to join our team who is committed to developing their skills and progressing within the company and this exciting industry.
The position is on the Gardening/Estate Maintenance side of the business, for an individual with good practical gardening knowledge and experience who takes pride in their work and wants to continue developing their skills.
The position would involve working within McNaughton's gardening team, which undertakes the maintenance and progression of various beautiful private gardens and country estates throughout East Sussex and Kent.
We are particularly interested in candidates who have previous experience working as a professional gardener, or who have experience managing and maintaining gardens to a high standard. Good day-to-day gardening ability is fundamental to the role. A strong knowledge of plants and horticulture is an advantage, but we recognise that this can be developed through experience and training.
The working responsibilities/skills would include but are not limited to:
- Border and bed maintenance, including weeding, planting and general care.
- Lawn maintenance, including grass cutting, edging, feeding and renovation.
- Hedge trimming, both regular and more ornamental.
- General garden maintenance and presentation.
- Pruning, trimming and training of plants.
- Garden clearance and seasonal work.
- Sweeping, leaf blowing and maintenance of hard surfaces, paths and garden furniture.
- Maintenance and cleaning of water features and irrigation systems.
- Safe operation of gardening machinery, subject to training.
- Developing knowledge of plants, their care and seasonal requirements.
- Working as part of a team to maintain and improve gardens and estates to a high standard.
- Where appropriate, taking responsibility for the management and day-to-day maintenance of individual gardens or areas.
About you
We're looking for someone who takes pride in being a good gardener and enjoys producing a high standard of work.
You will ideally have previous professional gardening or garden management experience, although we are also happy to hear from less experienced candidates who demonstrate the right attitude, enthusiasm and potential.
You should be:
- Able to drive and have your own reliable transport, with the ability to commute to Crowborough, East Sussex.
- Happy to work outdoors in all weather conditions.
- A confident and capable gardener with a good understanding of the fundamentals of garden maintenance.
- Reliable, punctual and well organised.
- Able to communicate effectively with colleagues and our valued clients.
- Keen to do your best on every job and take pride in the quality of your work.
- Able to take direction and follow instruction, while also being comfortable working independently.
- Proactive, with the ability to identify what needs doing and take ownership of your work.
- Able to work well within a team.
- Professional, respectful and courteous when working at clients' homes and private estates.
- Highly attentive to detail, with a good eye for presentation.
- Keen to learn and develop your gardening, plant and horticultural knowledge.
- Motivated to progress within the company and take on greater responsibility as your skills and experience develop.
Experience and progression
We appreciate that candidates come from different backgrounds and may have different levels of experience.
For this particular position, we are looking for someone with a good level of practical gardening experience, particularly someone who has worked professionally in gardens or has experience managing the maintenance of gardens or estates.
However, if you have less experience but have a genuine passion for gardening, a good basic knowledge and the right attitude, we would still encourage you to apply. We have other opportunities within the business that may be more appropriate to your current level of experience and salary expectations, and we would be happy to discuss these with you.
We are committed to developing our team and offer excellent opportunities to build your skills and progress within the company through McNaughton's Academy, on-site training and external training days.
What we can offer
- Salary of £28,000–£30,000 per year, negotiable depending on experience.
- Progression opportunities within the business.
- McNaughton's Academy learning and development programme.
- On-site training and mentoring.
- Opportunities for external training days.
- Company pension.
- 28 days paid holiday per year, including bank holidays (full-time position).
- Uniform and PPE provided.
- On-site parking.
- The opportunity to work in a variety of beautiful private gardens and country estates across East Sussex and Kent.
- The opportunity to develop your skills within an established, award-winning company.
If this sounds like you...
If you're a good gardener who takes pride in your work, enjoys working outdoors and wants to develop your skills and career, we'd love to hear from you.
Less experienced candidates are also welcome to apply. If we feel another position within McNaughton's would be a better fit for your current experience and salary expectations, we will be happy to discuss this with you.
