Horticulture Operative – Apprenticeship
Location: Camborne
Salary: Apprenticeship Grade (£8.00 per hour during first year of apprenticeship)
Terms & Conditions: Full Time (37 hours/52 weeks), Fixed Term Contract 18-24-months, Support Contract

About the Role
Are you enthusiastic about horticulture and enjoy working outdoors? Would you like to develop practical skills and gain a recognised qualification while working alongside experienced grounds professionals?
The Cornwall College Group is looking for a Horticulture Operative Apprentice to join our Grounds Maintenance team in Camborne.
This is an exciting opportunity to start your career in horticulture and grounds maintenance, gaining valuable hands-on experience across a range of activities while working towards your apprenticeship qualification. You’ll be supported by experienced colleagues who will help you develop your practical skills, knowledge and confidence.
What will you be doing?
As a Horticulture Operative Apprentice, you’ll gain experience in a wide range of grounds maintenance and horticultural activities, including:
- Grass cutting using pedestrian and ride-on machinery.
- Strimming, brush cutting and hedge trimming.
- Planting trees, shrubs, hedging and seasonal plants.
- General gardening, including weeding and bed maintenance.
- Leaf clearance and seasonal grounds maintenance.
- Lawn and amenity grass care.
- Tree and shrub pruning.
- Plant propagation.
- Astro pitch sweeping and maintenance.
- Supporting biodiversity and ecological improvements.
- Using, cleaning and safely maintaining hand tools and machinery.
- Litter picking and maintaining clean, safe outdoor spaces.
- Identifying and reporting hazards and working safely in accordance with risk assessments and College procedures.
You’ll also undertake relevant health and safety training and learn how to use personal protective equipment and grounds maintenance equipment safely.
Skills & Experience
For this apprenticeship, we’re looking for someone who is enthusiastic, reliable and keen to learn, with an interest in horticulture, gardening or grounds maintenance. You’ll enjoy working outdoors, take pride in your work, have good attention to detail and be able to work both independently and as part of a team.
You’ll be organised, adaptable and willing to develop new skills, with a basic understanding of health and safety. GCSE Grade 4/C or above (or equivalent) in English and maths is desirable, with support available to achieve Level 2 Functional Skills where required.
