Full job description
Grounds Maintenance Operative / Trainee Arborist Great Oaks Tree Services - Preston, PR4 1TS
£24,420 to £39,520 per year | Full-time | In person
We're looking for someone to join our grounds maintenance team with a view to progressing into arboriculture.
This isn't a trick or a vague promise. We're an Arboricultural Association Approved company with our own in-house training centre, and we've done this before. If you show up, work hard, and have the right attitude, there's a genuine path here into tree surgery and a long-term trade.
You'll start on grounds maintenance. That means grass cutting, strimming, hedge work, clearance, helping the tree surgery teams on site, keeping equipment clean, and doing yard duties. It all of it matters, and anyone who's gone on to become a good arborist has done exactly this first.
When you've proven you're reliable and ready, we'll start moving you into arboriculture. Ground operations first, then chainsaw work, climbing, aerial rescue, rigging, dismantling, the lot. We won't rush it, and we won't hold it back if you've earned it.
What we're looking for
Honestly, the CV matters less than the person. We'd rather have someone with no experience and a brilliant attitude than the opposite. Previous grounds, landscaping, forestry, farming, or labouring work is useful but not essential.
What does matter:
- You turn up on time, every time
- You work hard regardless of the weather
- You don't think any job is beneath you
- You take instruction well and actually want to learn
- You take pride in your work and how you represent the company
- You're in it for a career, not just a wage
A full UK driving licence is preferred. Right to work in the UK is required.
How to apply
Send us a short message with your name, location, contact number, and a bit about yourself. Tell us why you want to get into this industry and give us one example that shows you're reliable or committed. That's it.

We hire on attitude. If that sounds like you, get in touch.
