Full job description

To assist with the day-to-day maintenance and development of the gardens and grounds, ensuring all areas are maintained to a high standard.

The Gardener will work alongside the Estate Manager and undertake a variety of practical horticultural and grounds-maintenance duties.

The gardens are planted in a prairie style and need refreshing. This opportunity is a great stepping stone towards the role of Head Gardener. We are looking for a strong candidate that is able to ‘hit the ground running’ and that will bring their own ideas and make the garden their own.

Key Responsibilities

Garden Maintenance

· Assist with the general maintenance of lawns, borders, beds, hedges and planted areas.

· Weeding, planting, pruning and deadheading as required.

· Assist with the planting and establishment of trees, shrubs, perennials and seasonal plants.

· Cut back and remove overgrown or unwanted vegetation.

· Assist with dividing, moving and propagating plants where appropriate.

· Maintain paths, patios, driveways and other hard-standing areas.

· Clear leaves, fallen branches, fruit and other garden debris.

· Assist with hedge cutting and shrub maintenance.

· Support seasonal garden tasks, including winter preparation, spring and autumn planting.

· Using and maintaining irrigation systems.

· Using machinery – strimmer’s, mowers – ride on and push and hedge cutters.

Grounds & Estate Maintenance

· Assist with general grounds maintenance and keeping outdoor areas clean and tidy.

· Maintain and tidy garden equipment, tools, sheds & working areas.

· Perform general maintenance tasks at the property including but not limited to: weekly bin schedule, assistance with pool maintenance, waterfall maintenance, keeping all areas of the estate clean and tidy, maintaining gates and ensuring in good working order, cleaning security cameras, car cleaning, monitoring of sewage treatment plant, monitoring gas and diesel levels, taking utility readings, monitoring and liaising with pest control.

Skills & Experience

Essential

· Previous experience in a gardening, horticultural, grounds maintenance ideally on a private estate.

· RHS Level 2 or relevant practical experience.

· Good practical skills and a willingness to undertake physical outdoor work.

· Ability to work independently and as part of a team.

· Good attention to detail.

· Reliable, punctual, professional and hardworking.

· Ability to follow instructions and work safely.

· Good communication skills.

· Full UK driving licence.

Desirable

· RHS Level 3 or equivalent.

· PA1/PA6 or other relevant spraying qualifications.

· Chainsaw certificates

Physical Requirements

The role involves regular outdoor and physical work, including lifting and carrying, bending, kneeling, digging and working in all weather conditions. The successful candidate must be able to safely undertake the physical requirements of the role.
