Job Title: Estate Gardener

Job Overview:

  • Estate Gardener - North Yorkshire - full-time - live in position - generous salary package with cottage.
  • Directly responsible to the owner, the role is varied, covering all aspects relating to the garden and wider estate.
  • Working 8 am to 5 pm, Monday to Friday, with caretaking and out of hours shared across the team.
  • We are looking for a skilled gardener to join a small team working on a beautiful, private estate between York and Harrogate. The estate is a much loved family home, with established and long-serving staff. It comprises c. 100 acres including the walled gardens surrounding the 17th century house, glasshouse, vegetable and soft fruit gardens, orchard and parkland.


  • Garden maintenance (lawn management, soil care, herbicides, pesticides, irrigation, hedge cutting)
  • Sowing, cultivating and propagation of plants, trees, and shrubs.
  • Land management (tree care, leaf collection, joinery, hard landscaping, pest control)
  • General maintenance (car, machinery, building exteriors, basic DIY, trades company support).
  • Complete gardening work outside of the estate (York, Kirk Hammerton & ad hoc jobs)
  • Security care
  • Driving and dog sitting will be required both in and out of hours.
  • Complete out-of-hours duties


  • Experience and good knowledge of horticultural practices including maintaining herbaceous borders, roses, hedges, pruning techniques, pest and disease control, plant propagation, mulching and weed control, compost management, lawn care, hedge/topiary, strimming, leaf blowing, some vegetable and nursery growing, bedding planting and soil management.
  • Competence in the safe operations and maintenance of garden machinery including strimmers, sprayers, hedge cutters, mowers, garden/compact tractors and trailers, and leaf blowers.
  • Chainsaw and spraying certificates (PA1/PA6) are a bonus but not essential.
  • Full driving licence.
