Full job description
We are seeking an enthusiastic, practical and self-motivated Gardener & Horticulturist to join Jekka's Herb Farm.
About the Role
This is a varied and rewarding role combining gardening, horticulture and general support activities across the Herb Farm. Working alongside Jekka McVicar VMH, you will help care for Jekka's Herb Garden, Jekka's Herbetum and our collection of over 400 varieties of herbs.
As Jekka's enters a new chapter, our focus is shifting from large-scale plant production towards preserving and sharing over forty years of herb-growing knowledge through our gardens, herb experiences and specialist herb collection. This role will play an important part in caring for the gardens and living collection at the heart of Jekka's.
We are a small family business and are looking for someone who enjoys taking responsibility, working independently and getting stuck in. This role will suit someone who can identify what needs doing, maintain high standards and take pride in caring for the gardens and plant collection without needing close supervision.
We welcome applications from enthusiastic gardeners looking to develop their horticultural knowledge, as well as experienced horticulturists seeking a varied and rewarding role in a unique setting.
No two days are the same. One day you may be propagating herbs and potting plants, while the next you could be planting, pruning, weeding or supporting seasonal projects across the Herb Farm.
Key Responsibilities
- Support the upkeep of Jekka's Herb Garden, Jekka's Herbetum and surrounding areas, including planting, digging, weeding and pruning;
- Assist with the maintenance and development of plant borders, the private garden and vegetable garden;
- Help prepare gardens and spaces for workshops, tours and herb experiences;
- Support general farm maintenance tasks as required, including grass cutting, hedge trimming and power washing;
- Assist with seasonal gardening projects and improvements across the Herb Farm.
- Assist in the propagation, division and potting of herbs and other plants;
- Maintain healthy, high-quality sales stock and growing plants;
- Undertake watering and daily plant care, including occasional weekend watering duties;
- Monitor plant health and report any pest, disease or cultivation issues;
- Assist with seed packing, labelling and plant signage;
- Support the maintenance of plant records and stock management systems.
Experience
- A genuine interest in plants, gardening and horticulture;
- Practical gardening, horticultural or nursery experience;
- Ability to work independently and prioritise tasks with minimal supervision;
- Proactive, flexible and adaptable approach to work;
- An eye for detail and pride in maintaining high standards;
- Physically fit and comfortable undertaking manual outdoor work in all seasons, including lifting compost, moving trolleys and carrying trays of plants;
- Ability to work as part of a small team;
- Own transport, as the Herb Farm is located down a country lane.
- Previous horticultural experience (one year or more in a relevant role);
- Experience working in a commercial nursery or plant production environment;
- Experience in propagation, potting and plant care;
- Knowledge of common plant pests and diseases;
- RHS Level 2 qualification (or equivalent) or working towards one;
- Experience working within a family business or small organisation;
- Experience working with customers, volunteers or visitors.
- Enthusiastic, reliable and self-motivated;
- Positive and practical approach to work;
- Strong attention to detail;
- Enjoys working outdoors and as part of a small team;
- Keen to contribute to the continued development of Jekka's Herb Farm.
- Permanent position;
- Full-time (39 hours per week, 5 days per week), although part-time arrangements may be considered for the right applicant;
- Flexibility is required to accommodate seasonal demands, weather conditions and occasional weekend work.
Salary
£26,000–£32,000 per annum, depending on experience.
Interview Process
Successful applicants will be invited to an initial telephone interview with Jekka, followed by an on-site interview and introduction to the team.
To Apply
Please send your CV and a covering letter explaining why you are interested in the role to sales@jekkas.com.
Applications will be reviewed as they are received.
