Principal Highways and Drainage Engineer


We're looking for Highways and Drainage engineers to join our team in various locations around the UK.

Locations: Birmingham / Bristol / Cambridge / Cardiff / Glasgow / Leeds / Liverpool / London / Manchester / Newcastle / Norwich / Plymouth – agile working, with up to 1-2 days per week from home if desired

Hours: 40 hours per week – flexibility on hours available if desired

Sector: Working across all sectors of the built environment

Join us as a Principal Highways and Drainage Engineer and become part of one of the UK's leaders in temporary works design and management and construction-related technical services. As part of our 100-strong team, you'll get to work on hundreds of projects across one of the most diverse and high-profile portfolios in the country, with access to Kier's £11bn+ project pipeline – supporting complex construction and major infrastructure schemes from concept through to delivery.

  • Practically-minded, with a strong grounding in Highways and Drainage engineering principles and knowledge of applicable design standards?
  • A Chartered Engineer (CEng) or of equivalent experience?

What will you be responsible for?

Leading the delivery of a broad range of complex construction engineering services, including some or all of: highways and drainage temporary works design and checking, reviewing permanent designs for compliance and buildability, supporting tenders and preconstruction planning, and providing technical support to overcome construction-stage and post-construction issues and defects.

Main responsibilities

  • Acting as Project Lead for multiple complex projects, managing technical scope, programme, budget and relationships with preconstruction and construction teams, from bid through to delivery
  • Producing, checking and reviewing design outputs such as calculations, sketches, drawings, 3D models, reports and risk assessments, ensuring compliance with CDM, SHE, EA procedures and QA processes
  • Developing yourself, other individuals and the wider team, contributing to the continuous improvement of processes and systems, enabling the business to adapt to current and future challenges.
