Due to retirement, we are looking for a meticulous, well-organised and conscientious Medical Coder to join our friendly and established team. This is an important role within the Practice, helping to ensure that patients’ medical records are accurate, up to date and contain relevant clinical information to support their ongoing care.

We are looking for someone who shares our values, takes pride in their work and understands the importance of accuracy, confidentiality and attention to detail. Previous coding experience would be beneficial, but we are also interested in candidates who have the right skills, aptitude and willingness to learn.

Key Responsibilities:

Accurately code medical diagnoses, procedures, and consultations from clinical notes, hospital letters, and discharge summaries
Translate clinical information into appropriate SNOMED CT codes within the EMIS clinical system.
Maintain accurate up-to-date electronic summaries for all patients registered with the Practice.
Identify relevant information that is appropriate for inclusion in the patient’s electronic medical record.
Review and assess information contained within the paper records (Lloyd George notes).
Attend Coding Team meetings and contribute ideas to improve the accuracy, consistency and effectiveness of the coding process.
Assist with general administrative duties and undertake other reasonable tasks appropriate to the role, as required.
Maintain strict patient confidentiality and comply with data protection legislation and Practice policies at all times.

Essential requirements:

The ability to review clinical letters and medical records quickly and accurately.
The ability to identify significant clinical information within documents.
Good attention to detail and the ability to recognise unclear or questionable information and raise concerns appropriately.
The ability to learn to use the Practice’s electronic medical record system (EMIS) and other relevant software applications.
The ability to learn and apply the hierarchical structure of SNOMED CT codes.
Good written communication skills and the ability to maintain accurate records.
A professional, helpful approach when representing the Practice.
An understanding of the importance of patient confidentiality and data protection.

The ability to follow written procedures, instructions and Practice policies.

Desirable attributes:

Previous clinical or healthcare experience, with an understanding of medical terminology and procedures.
Previous experience of medical coding or working with electronic patient records.
The ability to interpret difficult handwritten medical notes.

Has a reliable means of travel to work.
Available for work throughout the year.
Can make robust and reliable arrangements to address any other responsibilities (e.g. childcare).
Likely to remain at Fernville for sufficient time to justify the necessary investment in training.
