Made Smarter Internship – Information for applicants
- The success of embedding digital transformation, analysing the data generated by new systems or supporting new technological processes in a organisation is often dependent upon the skills and knowledge available.

- The intern is employed and supervised by the business, supported by Brunel University and the Made Smarter Adoption team from London and Partners.
- The internship will focus on a project over a period of 12-weeks full time (part time options may also be available).
- The funded intern will work on a defined project during that period to support digital technology adoption in the company.
What is it like working here?
Cableduct is the UK’s leading supplier of premium-quality floor boxes and cable management solutions, many of which are bespoke for our customers.
We are a family-owned business that has been manufacturing in the UK for 50 years. We provide beautiful hand-finished products and work closely with customers to understand their objectives and challenges and develop tailor-made solutions together.
Core customers are specifiers and premium brands operating primarily in the UK but also globally. We supply installers and end users with product both direct and indirect via wholesalers.
We serve many sectors, including luxury hotels, premium hospitality & leisure venues, branded retail, palaces and museums, prime office space, high end residential, automotive retail, education and healthcare.
Our manufacturing process involves turning sheet metal into beautiful and highly engineered floor box and trunking solutions.
- Sheet metal is bought in and the first step in the manufacturing process is to punch out these sheets into pre programmed product configurations.
- We use SolidWorks 3D CAD design and 2D Radan CAM software for programming CNC-controlled sheet metal punch machines as follows:
- Radan 2D CAM software programmes Trumpf CNC punch machines, Flat 2D programming for our sheet metal products
- We want to create new 3D CAD product drawings in SolidWorks, which we then ‘flatten’ into Radan 2D CAM programmes for production. These are for standard products - we now have templates for our two main floor box ranges, 700 series and Minima. We also use SolidWorks for bespoke product development which need templates as a start point for the process
What will you be doing?
In summary, you will be creating production quality CAD drawings in 3D solid works design software and the main steps of your internship will be as follows:
- All work will be done at our factory as you will need to access the physical parts, collaborate effectively with key people and learn and get up to speed quickly
- Complete intensive manufacturing induction and training process so you understand our product range and how it is manufactured from a practical viewpoint before developing CAD drawings in SolidWorks design software
- Gain understanding of our existing template CAD drawings in SolidWorks design software by reviewing completed templates of our core floor box range
- Create production quality CAD drawing templates of our: Core trunking range, including accessories; Main interfaces with our floor boxes, i.e. junction boxes, spigots; Liaise with Solid Solutions, who provide us with technical support, to enable you to work as independently as possible
- Support and improve bespoke product development process using SolidWorks; Convert CAD drawings into customer-facing documents and visuals to aid customer collaboration
- Raise skills of our programmers while doing the above work
