Senior Biomedical Scientist (Generalist)

The Opportunity

Our client is seeking an experienced Senior Biomedical Scientist (Generalist) to join their growing laboratory team in Oxfordshire.

Working within a modern, innovative laboratory, you will play a key role in leading routine histopathology operations, maintaining quality standards, supporting junior colleagues, and driving continuous improvement across the service.

Key Responsibilities

Laboratory Leadership & Operations:

• Lead the routine Histopathology section, ensuring high-quality service delivery.
• Provide technical and scientific expertise across laboratory operations.
• Support departmental objectives, turnaround times and service delivery targets.
• Supervise, mentor and develop junior laboratory staff.
• Participate in recruitment, performance reviews and training initiatives.
• Maintain and review SOPs, competency assessments and training records.
• Support compliance with UKAS, ISO standards, laboratory policies and health & safety requirements.

Technical Duties:

• Receive, track, label and store patient samples accurately.
• Perform and oversee the complete Histopathology workflow, including:
• Specimen accessioning
• Grossing and dissection
• Tissue processing
• Embedding
• Microtomy
• Staining
• Digital slide scanning and digitisation
• Rotate across specialist areas including Immunohistochemistry (IHC) and special stains where required.

Quality & Compliance:

• Lead quality control and quality assurance activities.
• Support UKAS accreditation and audit preparation.
• Participate in internal and external quality assessment programmes.
• Investigate and resolve technical or quality-related issues.
• Ensure adherence to ISO 15189:2022 standards and laboratory best practice.

Method Development & Innovation:

• Assist in the development, validation and optimisation of laboratory methods.
• Contribute to projects involving digital pathology and laboratory innovation.
• Support research and development initiatives where appropriate.

Documentation & Reporting:

• Maintain accurate laboratory records and documentation.
• Produce clear and accurate reports.
• Ensure compliance with GDPR, confidentiality requirements and patient data protection standards.

About You

Essential Requirements:

• HCPC Registered Biomedical Scientist.
• Minimum 5 years' post-registration experience within a UKAS-accredited Histopathology laboratory.
• Demonstrable competency and commitment to Continuing Professional Development (CPD).
• Strong knowledge of Histopathology laboratory processes and quality systems.
• Experience supporting UKAS inspections and audits.
• Ability to supervise, mentor and support junior team members.
• Strong problem-solving and technical troubleshooting skills.
• Excellent communication skills with the ability to provide scientific and technical guidance.
• Ability to participate in weekend rotations when required.

Desirable Experience:

• IBMS Higher Specialist Diploma.
• MSc or equivalent postgraduate qualification.
• Immunohistochemistry (IHC) experience.
• Experience working within a digital pathology environment.
• Method validation and laboratory development experience.
