Full job description

Principal Scientist – Immunology

Excellerate Bioscience Ltd are currently seeking a highly motivated candidate with a strong immunology background to join our in-vitro pharmacology team. We offer a dynamic team environment, working in partnership with our clients to provide flexible solutions from early-stage target identification to late stage detailed mechanism of action studies, across a wide range of different drug target classes and disease areas.

Role and Responsibilities

This is a senior scientific role for an individual with extensive experience in immunology applied to preclinical drug discovery, gained through a PhD and 8+ years' relevant experience within the CRO, pharmaceutical or biotech industry. As Principal Scientist, you will provide leadership within the team, bringing scientific expertise in multiple areas of immunology to drive client programs. You will be independent and take ownership of experimental strategy, assay development and scientific delivery of robust and timely data in these areas. The role will include line management and scientific supervision of experimental scientists, with responsibility for developing team capability and supporting effective resource planning and project prioritisation.

You will actively support business development in immunology, in part through your own networks, working with existing and prospective clients to understand scientific requirements, develop appropriate experimental strategies and identify opportunities for new projects, technologies and assay platforms. This will include leading proposals and presentations, and representing Excellerate's scientific capabilities externally.

Skills and Experience:

  • PhD with 8+ years' relevant industry experience, with a strong focus on immunology and in-vitro pharmacology (Essential).
  • Extensive drug discovery experience across immunology and immuno-oncology programmes, as well as a range of target classes and drug modalities, including small molecules and biologics.
  • Expert practical experience in the development and application of quantitative cellular and immunological assays, including flow cytometry, high-content imaging, qPCR, cytokine/biomarker assays and other relevant cellular analysis technologies. Strong understanding of assay development, optimisation and validation.
  • Experience translating immunology assays into screening and medium- to high-throughput applications, including implementation of automation, robotics and liquid-handling technologies to improve throughput, reproducibility and data quality.
  • Strong expertise in experimental design and scientific strategy, with the ability to define appropriate approaches, interpret complex datasets, identify risks and contingencies, and translate findings into clear scientific recommendations.
  • Excellent communication, leadership and client-facing skills, with experience leading and supervising scientific teams, leading internal and external scientific communication, presenting findings, preparing reports and proposals, and working directly with clients to support programme strategy and delivery.
  • Strong commercial awareness, including personal networks with potential clients, with the ability to identify new opportunities, develop new assay capabilities and contribute to business development activities.
  • Ability to contribute to effective laboratory management, HSE and relevant regulatory requirements as required by the company.

What we Offer:

Our benefits package includes a competitive salary, annual bonus, pension contribution, private medical insurance, life insurance, on-site parking, plus additional benefits. This position is based at our new state-of-the-art central Nottingham facility.
