Job Overview

We are seeking a proactive and skilled Property Counsel to provide high-quality legal support on a diverse range of contentious land and property matters. Working within a fast-paced, multidisciplinary environment, you will advise on property litigation strategies, landlord and tenant disputes, and discretionary property schemes, while ensuring corporate risks are minimised. This role offers an excellent opportunity to manage complex, high-profile caseloads with appropriate supervision, collaborate closely with internal and external stakeholders, and help shape consistent legal standards across the organisation.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Property Dispute Advisory: Advise, with appropriate supervision, on contentious land and property matters, including landlord and tenant disputes, residential, commercial, and agricultural possession, debt recovery, valuation disputes, trespass, access, and title issues.
  • Litigation Management: Manage property litigation matters from inception to resolution, including advising on legal strategy, case management, settlements, evidence collection, disclosure, court deadlines, trial and witness preparation, and legal costs.
  • Alternative Dispute Resolution: Provide guidance on Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) policies, procedures, and practical application in individual cases.
  • Property Schemes & Notices: Assist with delivering robust legal support across a range of property matters, including discretionary property schemes, application of the Equality Act, utilities, acquisitions and disposals, statutory powers, settlement agreements, and formal notices.
  • External Counsel Management: Instruct and manage external legal counsel when required, taking responsibility for monitoring quality, managing budgets, tracking timescales, and controlling costs.
  • Continuous Improvement: Draft, update, and maintain standard-form template documentation to continuously improve operational efficiency, business compliance, and consistent working practices.
  • Reporting & Briefings: Prepare clear legal advice, reports, and briefings for colleagues across the wider business to facilitate open communication and support informed decision-making.
  • Legal Research: Conduct thorough research into relevant legislation, case law, and legal procedures to ensure the business remains up to date and fully compliant.
  • Risk Mitigation: Identify and mitigate legal risks, ensuring that advice is delivered in a practical manner that protects the business while adhering to consistent corporate standards.
  • EDI Commitment: Actively promote and embed Equality, Diversity, and Inclusion (EDI) principles across all aspects of work, supporting organisational policies and initiatives.

Ideal Candidate:

  • Qualifications: Qualified Solicitor or Chartered Legal Executive with post-qualification experience (PQE) in property litigation (indicatively 3 to 10 years PQE, though suitable candidates outside this range will be considered).
  • Sector Experience: A proven track record gained either in-house or in private practice dealing with large corporate bodies, public organisations, or complex infrastructure entities.
  • Technical Expertise: Strong experience in managing contentious aspects of residential, commercial, and agricultural tenancies, alongside conducting or assisting with possession proceedings and debt recovery work (including pre-action, claims, and enforcement).
  • Litigation & Notices: Demonstrated ability to prepare formal property-related notices and handle formal court proceedings efficiently.
  • Stakeholder Management: Outstanding relationship-building and communication skills, with the ability to influence, advise, and liaise effectively with senior clients, stakeholders, utilities, and transport undertakers.
  • Problem Solving: Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills, with the adaptability to navigate unique challenges where established precedents or procedures may not exist.
  • Organisation & Drive: Advanced planning, organisational, and prioritisation skills, with the ability to balance multiple urgent tasks, maintain strict attention to detail, and deliver high-quality outputs to demanding deadlines.
  • Teamwork: A collaborative professional who thrives when working within a multidisciplinary team in a high-pressured, fast-paced environment.
