Help Change Lives Through Education

Are you a passionate Maths or English tutor looking for a role where your teaching genuinely makes a difference?

We are seeking an inspiring Functional Skills Tutor to deliver City & Guilds Functional Skills qualifications from Entry Level 1 to Level 2 within a prison education setting. This is a unique opportunity to support learners on their rehabilitation journey, helping them develop the skills, confidence and qualifications needed to progress into employment and build brighter futures.

About the Role

As a Functional Skills Tutor, you will deliver engaging and inclusive lessons to groups of up to 12 learners, supporting individuals with a wide range of educational backgrounds, learning needs and abilities. You will use innovative teaching approaches, adaptive learning techniques and digital resources to make Maths and English relevant, accessible and enjoyable.

You will:

  • Deliver Functional Skills Maths or English qualifications from Entry 1 to Level 2.
  • Conduct initial assessments and use BKSB diagnostics to identify learner starting points.
  • Develop and maintain Individual Learning Plans (ILPs).
  • Create engaging lesson plans that support learner progression and achievement.
  • Motivate and inspire learners to reach their full potential.
  • Support learners with additional learning needs and reasonable adjustments.
  • Monitor progress and prepare learners for examinations and assessments.
  • Promote literacy, numeracy and reading for pleasure across the prison environment.
  • Work collaboratively with prison staff, support practitioners and employability teams to support positive learner outcomes.

What We're Looking For

We are looking for a committed and enthusiastic educator who is passionate about helping people succeed.

Essential requirements:

  • Level 3 qualification in Maths and English.
  • Teaching qualification at Level 5 or above (PGCE, Cert Ed, DTLLS or equivalent), or willingness to work towards one.
  • Experience delivering Functional Skills Maths or English qualifications.
  • Strong lesson planning, classroom management and learner engagement skills.
  • Ability to adapt teaching methods to meet diverse learner needs.
  • Excellent communication, organisational and administrative skills.
  • A commitment to safeguarding, equality, inclusion and learner success.

Desirable:

  • Experience within prison education, adult learning or further education.
  • Experience using BKSB or similar diagnostic tools.
  • Knowledge of Ofsted's Education Inspection Framework (EIF).
  • Internal Quality Assurance qualification (or willingness to work towards).

Why Join Us?

This is more than a teaching role. Every lesson delivered has the potential to improve confidence, create opportunities and support meaningful rehabilitation. You'll be part of a dedicated team committed to helping learners gain the skills they need for life beyond custody.

If you are passionate about education, believe in second chances and want to make a lasting impact, we'd love to hear from you.

Apply today and help transform lives through learning.
