Position: Assessment Writer, Computing

Contract Type: Zero Hours

Pay: £450 payable per assessment window supported

Salary band: D

We are seeking a small panel of assessment writers for a new Level 4 computing module suite. Applicants are not expected to cover all ten modules. We anticipate that suitably experienced writers will be able to undertake assessments for two or more related modules.

Applicants should indicate:

  • The modules for which they have appropriate subject expertise;
  • The modules they would be confident assessing as a secondary specialism;
  • Their relevant teaching, assessment-writing and industry experience.

Writers should have strong expertise in one or more of the following areas:

  • Programming and software development: programming fundamentals, problem solving, object-oriented design, programming paradigms, APIs, version control, testing and debugging.
  • Algorithms and computational foundations: data structures, algorithm design and analysis, recursion, complexity, discrete mathematics, logic, proof, number theory, graphs, formal languages and automata.
  • Data and database systems: conceptual and relational modelling, SQL, relational and non-relational databases, data integrity and security, XML and metadata, information retrieval, indexing, data warehousing and analytical platforms.
  • Computer systems: digital logic, processor architecture, assembly or low-level programming, memory hierarchy, operating systems, systems programming, concurrency, networking and introductory cybersecurity.
  • Software engineering and project practice: requirements analysis, software lifecycles, project planning, architecture and design notation, quality assurance, collaborative development, deployment and professional practice.
  • Statistics, data science and artificial intelligence: probability, statistical inference, regression, data preparation, data visualisation, supervised and unsupervised learning, model validation and interpretation, and critical consideration of contemporary AI, including generative AI, large language models and AGI.
  • Professional and responsible computing: accessibility, EDI and inclusive design, sustainability, ethical and legal considerations, teamwork, professional communication and reflective practice.

Applicants should also be able to demonstrate:

  • current subject knowledge appropriate delivering to Level 4 or first-year undergraduate study;
  • Experience of designing valid, reliable and appropriately demanding assessments;
  • The ability to translate learning outcomes into authentic assessment tasks and clearly differentiated marking criteria;
  • Experience of developing practical, controlled, portfolio or project-based assessments, as appropriate to the subject;
  • The ability to produce complete assessment materials, including student briefs, evidence requirements, mark schemes and guidance for assessors and standardisation;
  • An understanding of academic integrity, assessment security and the implications of generative AI for assessment design;
  • The ability to design inclusive assessments that do not create unnecessary barriers for learners;
  • Willingness to respond constructively to technical review, moderation and revision.

Applications demonstrating credible breadth across related modules are particularly welcome.
