Full job description

Flint House Police Rehabilitation is a registered Charity mainly funded by donations from those in the police service. It provides physical rehabilitation and mental health support to members of the police service and retired police officers. The Charity operates a residential programme for 100+ patients every week and has been providing care to the police service since 1890.

We are recruiting for a Kitchen Assistant to support the Catering team in delivering a high-quality food service by assisting with food preparation, maintaining cleanliness and hygiene standards, and ensuring the kitchen operates safely and efficiently in accordance with UK Food Hygiene and Health & Safety regulations.

Hours of work: 32 hours | 4 days per week, mainly Monday to Thursday.

Principal Accountabilities

  • Assist chefs with basic food preparation tasks such as washing, peeling, chopping, weighing, and portioning ingredients.
  • Prepare simple food items as directed by the Chef, ensuring compliance with food safety standards.
  • Maintain high standards of cleanliness throughout the kitchen, including work surfaces, storage areas, and equipment.
  • Wash crockery, utensils, pots, pans, and kitchen equipment using commercial dishwashers and manual cleaning methods where required.
  • Ensure all cleaning tasks are completed in line with daily and weekly cleaning schedules and recorded appropriately.
  • Store deliveries correctly, checking quality and ensuring proper stock rotation using the FIFO (First In, First Out) method.
  • Dispose of kitchen waste appropriately, including general waste, food waste, and recycling, in accordance with environmental and Health & Safety regulations.
  • Maintain adequate levels of kitchen consumables (e.g., gloves, cleaning materials) and report shortages to the Chef.
  • Follow all Food Hygiene, Health & Safety, COSHH, and manual handling procedures at all times.
  • Work collaboratively with the kitchen team to ensure meals are prepared and served on time.
  • Support service delivery where required (e.g., assisting with plating or counter service).

Key Responsibilities for Health and Safety

  • Comply with Food Safety legislation and maintain personal hygiene standards.
  • Operate kitchen equipment safely and responsibly.
  • Follow safe systems of work, including manual handling and safe use of cleaning chemicals.
  • Report any hazards, faults, or maintenance issues promptly to the Chef or line manager.

Person Specification

Essential

  • Basic understanding of food hygiene and kitchen safety.
  • Ability to follow instructions and work as part of a team.
  • Good organisational skills and ability to work to deadlines.
  • Physically able to stand for long periods and lift items up to 20–25kg.
  • Reliable, punctual, and flexible approach to work.
  • Satisfactory DBS clearance.
  • Own transport due to location and no access to public transport.

Desirable

  • Level 2 Food Safety Certificate (or willingness to obtain).
  • Previous experience working as a Kitchen Assistant or in a commercial kitchen environment.
