Engineering Test Technician

Salary: £35K per annum

Reporting To: Chief Technical Officer

Location: Office Based in Papworth, Cambridge

Hours: 37.5 per week

Join one of the UK’s most exciting and rapidly growing solar energy businesses.

At Viridian Solar, we are shaping the future of solar technology within the construction sector. Part of Marshalls PLC, we combine the agility of a fast-growing innovative business with the stability and support of a leading UK PLC.

As we enter a new phase of expansion, we are looking for a motivated Engineering test technician to join our R&D team, contributing to new product development, product improvement and testing.

If you’re ambitious, curious and eager to learn, we’ll provide the training, support and opportunities to help you develop.

The role

We’re looking for an engineering technician to support product development and testing across the full lifecycle—from prototype build and type approval through to production and ongoing improvement. You’ll play a key role in both developing new products and enhancing existing ones through testing, diagnostics, and collaboration with internal teams and manufacturing partners.

This is a hands-on role involving prototype work, testing, and occasional travel, with opportunities to contribute to continuous improvement and innovation.

What you’ll be doing

  • Supporting product development from prototype build through to type approval and production testing
  • Contributing to the continuous improvement of existing products, including quality checks on pre-production batches and diagnostic testing
  • Participating in testing and certification activities for new and existing products
  • Maintaining R&D facilities and equipment to support development work

Product development and testing

  • Interpreting engineering requirements and technical specifications
  • Building and testing prototypes
  • Supporting type approval for UK and international markets
  • Preparing for and carrying out product testing (in the UK and occasionally overseas)
  • Supporting field trials and early installations of new products
  • Working with 3D CAD models and technical drawings

Product improvement and testing

  • Troubleshooting and resolving issues with existing products
  • Supporting product improvements through structured testing and analysis
  • Visiting sites to investigate and resolve installation or performance issues
  • Updating technical documentation and design files
  • Collaborating with manufacturing partners to support product quality and performance

About you

  • Experience in engineering design and/or testing (mechanical and/or electrical)
  • A relevant vocational qualification or equivalent practical experience
  • Understanding of product development and testing processes, with a minimum of 3 years' experience
  • Experience building and testing prototypes, including designing and making test rigs and working with workshop tools (or willingness to develop these skills)
  • Experience in electrical testing is helpful but not essential
  • Familiarity with product certification and type approval processes is beneficial
  • Comfortable using IT tools, including spreadsheets (e.g. Excel)
  • Ability to accurately record test data, produce reports, and communicate findings clearly

You may also bring:

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Attention to detail and an organised approach to work
  • Ability to manage time effectively and meet deadlines
  • A proactive mindset and willingness to take initiative
  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively
  • Clear and effective communication skills
  • Willingness to travel occasionally within the UK and internationally (with flexibility where possible)

What success looks like

  • Testing Ownership: You will take full ownership of product testing and accreditation processes at both national and international levels.
  • Proactive Problem Solving: You will independently propose, design, and construct test rigs as part of the root-cause analysis and problem-solving process.

What we offer

  • 26 days paid leave, rising to 28 days after two years’ service, plus public holidays
  • Discretionary annual bonus
  • Generous company pension scheme, 3% employee; 6% employer
  • Private Medical Insurance through Vitality Health
  • Company shares ownership programme
  • Cycle to work scheme
  • Summer and Christmas company events
  • Employee Assistance Programme
  • 2x Salary death in service
  • Employee discount scheme

Job Types: Full-time, Permanent

Pay: From £35,000.00 per year
