This role is based within an advanced Research & Development centre and forms part of the Packaging Sciences team, reporting to a Packaging Sciences Team Leader. The position combines hands-on laboratory and packaging analysis work with the successful completion of a part-time distance learning BSc (Hons) in Chemical Science through a UK university.

The successful candidate will support packaging assessment, materials analysis, and product investigation activities across the wider R&D function while developing technical and scientific expertise through structured academic study.

Key Responsibilities

Packaging & Product Testing

  • Prepare model products using standard recipes and package samples to industry specifications
  • Conduct filling, sealing, and processing activities using laboratory and pilot-scale equipment
  • Open and examine packaged samples for performance evaluation
  • Maintain accurate sample traceability through documentation, labelling, and digital systems
  • Assess packaging, coatings, and product performance using microscopy and investigative testing techniques
  • Identify defects, analyse potential failure modes, and contribute to root-cause investigations
  • Produce clear technical reports with documented findings and conclusions

Analytical Chemistry Support

Assist with analytical testing activities using techniques such as:

  • Sample preparation and dilution
  • Microwave digestion
  • Semi-automated titration
  • Ion chromatography
  • ICP-OES
  • FTIR spectroscopy
  • Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC)
  • High-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC)
  • Microscopy and imaging techniques

Technical & Laboratory Support

  • Record and manage sample information
  • Conduct sample photography and microscopy
  • Perform dimensional measurements, leak testing, and product analysis
  • Support investigations into material and packaging performance
  • Interpret technical data and communicate findings effectively

Materials & Coatings Evaluation

  • Carry out laboratory testing on coating and print systems
  • Support assessment of coating performance using pilot processing equipment
  • Evaluate mechanical and chemical performance of packaging materials
