Full job description

We need a skilled, passionate Gardener with strong plant and gardening knowledge to join our friendly team in the Oxford area. Ideally to start October/November

Our Company

Hadingham Kirk was founded over 10 years ago by Simon Hadingham and Mike Kirk with all our work coming from recommendation. We have a highly skilled team working in and around Oxford in all areas of gardening, including design, landscaping, carpentry, and garden maintenance. We take great care and pride in our work and cherish the long lasting relationships we build with our clients and our teams.

Our Team

The maintenance team, made up of 8 gardeners including a team leader, mostly tend to gardens designed by Hadingham Kirk, as well as several established gardens in the Oxford area. The team leader looks after the scheduling so the team spend most of their time doing what they do best. We look after approximately 50 gardens with each gardener getting the chance to manage their favourites.

The gardens range from smaller inner city back gardens to large country estates with garden styles varying from: contemporary, wildlife friendly, formal, cottage, kitchen, meadow, riverside, and sweeping country landscapes. Our aim is to bring out the best in these gardens, so they flourish and delight throughout the seasons. It is truly a lovely and rewarding career!

Our work days are usually split into two halves, visiting one garden in the morning and one in the afternoon. The gardens are revisited weekly or fortnightly so you can have a nice rhythm to the days whilst retaining variety.

Your Role

The work is split between working solo and in teams of two. We expect you to have good horticultural knowledge and to be able to approach a garden with an eye for detail, spotting any issues and identifying the actions needed. Excellent communication is essential for the role, both for talking to clients about their gardens and within the team.

Although you will already be a good gardener with great plant knowledge, we offer training and extra courses in specialised areas of gardening, and encourage advancement within the company.

  • Routine care and maintenance of gardens, including planting, flower and vegetable bed work, pruning, grass cutting, hedge cutting, fertilising, etc.
  • Monitoring, recording and reporting on the gardens’ health.
  • Using your knowledge to plan and give advice relating to the gardens' progress.
  • Setting up each day with the right equipment (all provided).
  • Driving to and from jobs (your own car/van is not needed during the day).
  • Adhering to HK policies and procedures.
  • Joining all of us in showing work ethic, good habits and personal character.
  • Contributing towards the smooth running of the team.
  • Communication with clients.
  • Communication with other teams in the company.

Skills/Experience:

  • Have a minimum of 1 year’s experience in a similar role.
  • Show good awareness of basic health and safety.
  • A full clean driving licence (REQUIRED).
  • Degree or diploma in horticulture, or equivalent experience or degree or diploma in ecology, environmental science, or a related field is preferred.
  • Relevant machinery certifications such as chainsaw use or pesticide use and handling Pa1 and Pa6 is preferred, though training will be provided where needed.

About you:

  • Excellent interpersonal skills.
  • Must be punctual, organised, respectful and able to work effectively under time pressure.
  • Must love gardening!
  • Must have high working standards.
  • Must be prepared to work in all weather conditions (full seasonal clothing is provided).
  • Must have a high level of integrity and honesty in all dealings.

Working Hours: The hours of work are 07:30 - 04:30, Monday to Friday. Working days include 1 hour of unpaid break. 28 days of paid annual leave including UK bank holidays.
