Job Description: Grounds Maintenance Team Leader

Position: Grounds Maintenance Team Leader

Location: Wall, Staffordshire

Reports to: Grounds Maintenance Manager

Job Summary:

The Grounds Maintenance Team Leader is responsible for leading a team of grounds maintenance workers in the upkeep and beautification of outdoor spaces. The ideal candidate will have extensive experience in the industry, expert horticulture knowledge, and a proven track record of effective team leadership. Soft landscaping and planting experience are preferred, and the candidate must be willing to stay overnight one day every six weeks as required.

Key Responsibilities:

Team Leadership:

  • Lead and supervise a team of grounds maintenance workers, providing guidance, direction, and support to ensure the efficient completion of tasks.
  • Delegate responsibilities effectively, utilising the skills and strengths of team members to maximise productivity and quality of work.
  • Conduct regular team meetings to communicate objectives, provide feedback, and address any issues or concerns.

Grounds Maintenance:

  • Oversee the maintenance and upkeep of outdoor spaces, including parks, gardens, lawns, and public areas.
  • Perform a range of grounds maintenance tasks, including mowing, strimming, edging, weeding, pruning, and planting, as needed.
  • Ensure that all work is carried out to a high standard, adhering to health and safety guidelines and industry best practices.

Horticulture Knowledge:

  • Utilise expert horticulture knowledge to identify plant species, diagnose plant health issues, and implement appropriate care and maintenance procedures.
  • Provide guidance and training to team members on horticultural techniques, plant selection, and care.

Soft Landscaping and Planting:

  • Plan and execute soft landscaping projects, including the design and installation of flower beds, shrub borders, and ornamental planting schemes.
  • Select appropriate plant species based on site conditions, soil types, and client preferences.
  • Oversee the planting and establishment of trees, shrubs, flowers, and other vegetation, ensuring proper spacing, depth, and care.

Overnight Stays:

  • Be prepared to stay overnight for one day every six weeks, as required, to oversee sites further afield, or address emergencies outside of regular working hours.

Qualifications and Experience:

  • Previous experience in the grounds maintenance industry, with a minimum of 3 years in a supervisory or leadership role.
  • Expert knowledge of horticulture principles, plant identification, and care techniques.
  • Experience in soft landscaping, including design, installation, and maintenance of flower beds and planting schemes.
  • Strong leadership and communication skills, with the ability to motivate and inspire team members.
  • Ability to work effectively under pressure and adapt to changing priorities.
  • Valid driver's license and/or relevant certifications may be required.
