Store Manager – Game Guru

Location: Touchwood Solihull, Birmingham Utilitia
Job Type: Full Time – Permanent
Salary: £32,000 – £35,000 per annum (depending on experience) + performance incentives
Reports To: General Manager / Director

Game Guru is an experiential board game café, retail, and social gaming destination designed to bring people together through play. Combining a curated library of 500+ board games, café hospitality, events, tournaments, and specialist retail, Game Guru creates a unique entertainment experience for families, friends, hobby gamers, and the wider community.

The Touchwood store is a flagship premium location focused on delivering exceptional customer experiences, community engagement, and strong commercial performance.

Role Overview

We are looking for an energetic, commercially minded, and hands-on Store Manager to lead the daily operations of our Touchwood Solihull venue.

The successful candidate will be responsible for overseeing all aspects of the business including customer experience, café operations, retail performance, events, staffing, and operational standards. This role requires a passionate leader who thrives in a fast-paced experiential environment and can create a welcoming, engaging, and community-driven atmosphere.

Key ResponsibilitiesStore Operations

  • Oversee the day-to-day running of the venue including opening and closing procedures.
  • Ensure high operational standards across café, gaming areas, retail floor, and event spaces.
  • Maintain a clean, safe, and welcoming environment at all times.
  • Ensure compliance with company procedures, food hygiene regulations, health & safety standards, and licensing requirements.
  • Manage daily operational issues efficiently and professionally.
  • Ensure smooth coordination between café, retail, and gaming operations.

Team Leadership & Staff Management

  • Recruit, train, supervise, and motivate team members.
  • Create staff rotas and manage labour costs effectively.
  • Conduct team briefings, training sessions, and performance reviews.
  • Lead by example with a positive and proactive management style.
  • Foster a strong team culture focused on customer experience and teamwork.
  • Support staff development and ongoing coaching.

Customer Experience

  • Deliver exceptional customer service and ensure every guest has a memorable experience.
  • Support customers with board game recommendations and gameplay guidance where required.
  • Resolve customer complaints and operational issues professionally.
  • Encourage repeat visits, loyalty engagement, memberships, and community participation.
  • Create a welcoming social atmosphere for all customers.

Events & Community Engagement

  • Support the planning and execution of events, tournaments, themed nights, and private bookings.
  • Help build strong relationships with local communities, schools, gaming groups, and businesses.
  • Support local marketing initiatives and promotional campaigns.
  • Assist in driving customer engagement through experiential activities and events.

Retail & Commercial Performance

  • Drive sales performance across café, retail, events, and memberships.
  • Monitor and report on store KPIs including sales, labour %, customer satisfaction, bookings, and average transaction values.
  • Ensure excellent merchandising and presentation standards across all retail displays.
  • Support stock management, ordering, and inventory control.
  • Identify opportunities to improve profitability and operational efficiency.

Board Game & Experiential Leadership

  • Ensure the Game Guru experiential concept is consistently delivered to a high standard.
  • Maintain and organise the physical game library, ensuring games are complete, clean, and properly categorised.
  • Encourage staff engagement with customers through gameplay teaching and recommendations.
  • Help create a fun, engaging, and inclusive environment for all ages and experience levels.

Financial & Administrative Duties

  • Manage daily cash handling and banking procedures.
  • Complete store reporting and operational documentation accurately.
  • Monitor wastage, stock loss, and operational costs.
  • Ensure company systems and reporting procedures are followed consistently.

Skills & Experience Required

  • Previous experience in a Store Manager, Assistant Manager, Hospitality Manager, or Retail Management role.
  • Strong leadership and team management skills.
  • Excellent communication and customer service abilities.
  • Commercial awareness with experience managing KPIs and sales performance.
  • Strong organisational and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to work flexibly including evenings, weekends, and bank holidays.
  • Passion for gaming, hospitality, retail, or experiential entertainment is highly desirable.
  • Personal Licence or hospitality experience is advantageous but not essential.
