This fixed-term locum consultant post is intended to support both the Paediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) and the KIDS Intensive Care and Decision Support (KIDSNTS) retrieval service at Birmingham Women’s and Children’s NHS Foundation Trust. The post is for 10 months to provide maternity cover from August 2026, with the successful candidate dividing their time equally between PICU and KIDSNTS on a 50:50 basis. The post holder will be expected to maintain clinical standards and protocols, participate in teaching and supervision of junior medical and nursing staff, contribute to audit, quality improvement and governance activity, and support the ongoing development of both services. The role will involve regular clinical duties across both PICU and KIDSNTS on a 50:50 basis, including daytime, on-call and weekend commitments.

Birmingham Women's and Children's NHS Foundation Trust is the first of its type in the UK. Our Trust was formed in February 2017 to drive forward our commitment to provide the highest quality, world-class physical and mental health care for our women, children and families. Uniting our hospitals means more seamless care; more investment to make greater advances in our specialist treatment and world-leading neo-natal and fetal work. Importantly, it also gives us a greater voice in shaping the future of family-centred care.
Birmingham Children's Hospital is a UK leading specialist paediatric centre with an international reputation in several areas.
Birmingham Women's Hospital is one of two dedicated women's hospitals in the UK, with the busiest single site maternity unit, delivering more than 8,200 babies a year offering a full range of gynaecological, maternity and neonatal care.
Our Trust is committed to creating the best place to work. We believe in promoting and enhancing inclusion, diversity and equality and encourage applications from all areas of the community, who meet the criteria for the role, regardless of age, gender identity, disability, race, religion or sexual orientation.
The appointee will be expected to participate in the delivery, development and ongoing improvement of paediatric intensive care and retrieval services within the Trust’s Service and Financial Framework and in line with the Trust’s clinical strategy. The post holder will contribute to high-quality clinical care across both PICU and KIDSNTS, including clinical governance, teaching, audit, quality improvement and service development activities.
The post holder will also be expected to participate in the activities of relevant Departmental, Directorate and Trust committees and working groups as required.
Please see attached documents for the detailed job description and main responsibilities.
