We are looking for an Experienced Carpenter / Joiner to support our ongoing construction projects on a self-employed subcontract basis, with opportunities for continued work.
This role would suit a skilled, versatile tradesperson with strong first and second fix carpentry experience, a good understanding of general building work and the ability to work independently from construction drawings.
We are particularly interested in someone who takes pride in their workmanship, understands construction sequencing and can take responsibility for completing their allocated work to a high standard.
Responsibilities
- Carry out first and second fix carpentry across extensions, conversions and refurbishment projects.
- Install floor joists, timber framing, stud partitions, door linings and associated structural timber components.
- Undertake roof carpentry, including traditional roof structures and associated timber work, where suitably experienced.
- Fit internal doors, skirting boards, architraves, flooring, kitchens and other finishing joinery.
- Read and interpret architectural drawings, structural details and construction specifications.
- Measure, set out and install components accurately, ensuring a high standard of workmanship.
- Undertake associated general building and refurbishment tasks within your skills and experience.
- Work effectively alongside bricklayers, plasterers, electricians, plumbers and other trades.
- Identify potential issues with drawings, materials or site conditions and raise them promptly with the site supervisor.
- Maintain a clean, organised and safe working environment.
- Complete allocated work efficiently, maintaining quality and agreed project timescales.
Qualifications and Experience
Essential:
- Minimum 5 years' relevant experience in carpentry and joinery, preferably within extensions and refurbishment projects.
- Strong practical experience in both first and second fix carpentry.
- Ability to read and work accurately from construction drawings.
- Experience working on residential construction sites, including occupied properties.
- Confidence working independently and managing allocated tasks without constant supervision.
- Good understanding of construction methods, sequencing and coordination with other trades.
- High standards of workmanship, particularly with finishing details.
- Own tools and reliable transport.
- Good communication skills, reliability and a professional attitude.
Desirable:
- NVQ Level 2 or 3 in Carpentry and Joinery or equivalent trade qualification.
- Valid CSCS card appropriate to the work.
- Experience with loft conversions, roof construction and structural alterations.
- Broader general building and refurbishment experience.
- Experience supervising or coordinating other tradespeople.
