We are looking for a Toolroom Improver to join our toolroom. You will learn to set and run manual cylindrical (OD) grinders and surface grinders, producing precision tungsten carbide and steel tooling components, and assist with assembly work including press-fitting. This role suits someone with basic engineering knowledge who wants to build a career in precision toolmaking. Full training will be given.

Responsible to: Production Manager

Key Responsibilities

  • Learn to set and operate manual cylindrical grinders, under supervision at first, to grind carbide inserts and steel die cases to drawing
  • Learn to set and operate surface grinders to produce flat, square and parallel components to drawing
  • Gain experience working between centres, in chucks, on mandrels, on magnetic chucks and in Dedtru fixtures
  • Learn to select, true and dress grinding wheels, including diamond and CBN wheels
  • Develop the skills to grind tapers, angles and forms and check them on the shadowgraph
  • Assist with pressing carbide inserts into steel cases using the hydraulic press
  • Support general toolroom work such as deburring, polishing and preparing parts
  • Carry out in-process inspection and help with final inspection and routine machine maintenance

Required Skills

  • Basic understanding of engineering drawings, including dimensions and tolerances
  • Able to use measuring instruments such as micrometers and verniers
  • Some experience on manual machines (grinding, turning or milling), through work, college or an apprenticeship
  • Good attention to detail and a willingness to learn
  • Reliable, with a careful and safe approach to work

Desirable

  • Any previous OD or surface grinding experience
  • Familiarity with plug/ring gauges, DTIs and slip gauges
  • NVQ Level 2 or 3 in Mechanical Engineering (Machining), a part-completed or completed machining apprenticeship, or equivalent
  • An interest in tooling, die making or toolroom work

What We Offer
