Electrical Engineer – Lift Engineering Career Pathway

About Us
Caltech Lifts is a family-run lift engineering business with nearly 50 years of experience. Operating from our head office in Dundee and our regional office in North Lanarkshire, we cover lift and stairlift maintenance across Scotland.

We are proud of our reputation for honesty, reliability, and high standards. Our success is built on our people, and we are committed to creating a supportive, professional environment where engineers can develop, take pride in their work, and build long-term careers.

The Opportunity

We're looking for an electrically-minded engineer who wants to move into a specialist, secure trade with genuine long-term career prospects. You don't need lift experience — you need to be strong electrically, comfortable reading wiring diagrams, confident fault-finding on machinery or control systems, experience of working with 3 phase.

We've had great success bringing engineers into lifts from other relatable industries (mainly engineers who have worked on factory machinery), taking people with the right electrical foundation and turning them into fully qualified lift engineers. This role is a genuine career change, not a junior "trainee" position — you'll be treated and paid as a developing engineer from day one, with a clear, funded route to full qualification.

What We Offer

  • A structured 4-week fast-track on-the-job induction, working alongside our experienced engineers
  • Fully funded route to an SVQ Level 3 in Lift Engineering, with your wages paid throughout
  • Competitive hourly rate from day one, with structured pay progression as you gain skills and qualifications
  • Company vehicle, specialist tools, and equipment provided
  • Pension scheme (4% employer contribution)
  • Ongoing training and development (including LEIA courses)
  • A genuine, mapped-out career path — not just a job

What You'll Be Doing

Once trained, you'll be working across service, repair, and reactive breakdowns on electric traction and hydraulic passenger and platform lifts, and associated equipment — diagnosing electrical and mechanical faults and carrying out repairs and servicing to a high standard. Over time you'll take on more complex fault-finding as your qualification and experience build.

What We're Looking For

  • A mechanical or electrical qualification (apprenticeship, HNC/HND, Level 3 or equivalent)
  • Strong electrical skills — able to read and interpret wiring diagrams and control panels
  • Confident fault-finding on machinery, plant, or electrical systems
  • Background in industries such as manufacturing, automotive, industrial maintenance, building services, or similar considered
  • Good communication and customer-facing skills
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Easy to get along with, friendly, and a genuine team player
  • Motivated and willing to learn — no ego, no attitude
  • Honest, reliable, and takes pride in doing things properly
  • Good sense of judgement and a strong moral compass
  • Full UK driving licence
  • Flexibility to work outside normal hours when required (with on-call joining the rota once trained)

Why Join Caltech? We're not a corporate — and we don't try to be. At Caltech, you'll be part of a close-knit, professional team where your work is valued, your voice is heard, and your development matters. We take pride in what we do, support each other, and deliver a high standard of service to our clients.

Apply Now If you've got the electrical ability and want a trade for life, we'd love to hear from you. Please send your CV along with a short covering note explaining why you think your skills would transfer well to lift engineering.
