Full job description

Business Development Manager – Umbrella Payroll Services

Location: Hybrid, Birmingham City Centre
Salary: £35,000 basic + uncapped commission
OTE: OTE £50,000 Year 1 / £65,000 Year 2

Build relationships. Grow a client network. Help shape a new business.

RB is acting on behalf of a client launching an exciting new umbrella payroll business.

Founded by industry experts with experience across recruitment, payroll, technology and compliance, our client is looking for a Business Development Manager to build and maintain relationships with recruitment companies locally and nationally.

This is an opportunity to join a startup at the beginning of its journey, work closely with experienced founders and play a meaningful part in its growth.

Energy, enthusiasm and professionalism are non-negotiable.

Our client wants someone who enjoys opening conversations, understands the value of consistent follow-up and takes pride in delivering on their promises.

The Role

Your focus will be clear:

Build a network of recruitment company clients, earn trust and develop lasting commercial partnerships.

You’ll speak with recruitment business owners, directors, consultants and operational teams, understand their requirements and explain how our client can support their business and the contractors they place.

Winning new business and maintaining the relationships you develop will be equally important.

You’ll stay close to your accounts, identify further opportunities and work with the onboarding and operational team to ensure clients receive the service they have been promised.

Your primary responsibility will be business development and account management, supported by specialists in payroll, onboarding and compliance.

What You’ll Be Doing

  • Identifying and approaching recruitment companies locally and nationally
  • Building relationships with owners, directors and other key decision-makers
  • Generating opportunities through cold calling, meetings, referrals, networking and consistent follow-up
  • Understanding each recruitment company’s priorities and expectations of an umbrella payroll partner
  • Explaining the service clearly and confidently, supported by educational content and demonstrations
  • Converting initial conversations into active commercial relationships
  • Maintaining and developing the accounts you win
  • Working closely with onboarding and operations to support a smooth client and contractor experience
  • Managing your pipeline and maintaining accurate CRM records
  • Delivering against agreed activity, conversion and commercial targets
  • Sharing client feedback and market insight with the founders
  • Representing the business professionally in every interaction

Who We’re Looking For

Our client is looking for someone with the personality, ambition and discipline to build a successful client network.

You may come from recruitment, umbrella payroll, sales, account management or another business development role.

Experience working with recruitment companies would be advantageous. Equally valuable will be your commercial judgement, willingness to learn and ability to build rapport with people at different levels of a business.

You’ll need to be:

  • Energetic and enthusiastic, bringing purpose and positivity to your work
  • Professional and dependable, following through on commitments
  • Confident building relationships over the phone and in person
  • Comfortable making cold calls and asking for business
  • Naturally curious about how businesses operate
  • Organised and disciplined with follow-up
  • Resilient when opportunities take time to develop
  • Motivated by clear targets and commercial results
  • Comfortable taking ownership while contributing to a small team

Emotional intelligence matters. You’ll need to listen carefully, understand different personalities and adapt your approach to earn trust.

You don’t need to arrive with an established client network.

You do need the drive and consistency to build one.

Why Join a Startup?

You’ll join while the company’s client network, reputation and ways of working are taking shape.

You’ll have direct access to the founders, the opportunity to contribute ideas and a clear connection between your work and the company’s progress.

That brings responsibility. You’ll need to be proactive, adaptable and willing to take ownership as the business develops.

It also offers the opportunity to make your mark early, build a valuable portfolio of relationships and develop your role as the company grows.

Behind you will be industry experts with practical experience and a clear focus on transparent service, reliable payroll and strong operational standards.

The Opportunity

Our client wants someone who is excited by the prospect of helping to build a business and taking pride in its success.

In return, it offers a £35,000 basic salary, uncapped commission and the opportunity to contribute from the outset.

If you enjoy developing business, building lasting relationships and turning ambition into action, we’d like to hear from you.

Apply through RB for a confidential conversation about the opportunity.
