About Us

Pickerings Hire is one of the UKs leading providers of modular buildings and site accommodation, supporting customers across the construction, education and wider commercial sectors.

With an established depot network and a strong reputation for service, quality and safety, we are continuing to grow our business and are looking for an experienced General Manager to lead our Swindon depot.

The Role

As General Manager, you will have overall responsibility for the performance, profitability, people and operational delivery of the Swindon depot.

This is an exciting opportunity to take the reins of an established and successful depot, building on its existing performance while identifying new opportunities for growth, improved efficiency and customer development.

This is a hands-on senior leadership role, requiring someone who can balance commercial performance with operational excellence and outstanding customer service. You will lead and develop the depot team, build strong customer relationships and identify opportunities to grow revenue, improve efficiency and strengthen the depot's overall performance.

Working closely with the wider Pickerings Hire leadership team and Head Office functions, you will play a key role in delivering our commercial and operational objectives.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Take overall accountability for the financial and operational performance of the Swindon depot.
  • Lead, motivate and develop the depot team, creating a culture of high performance, accountability, safety and teamwork.
  • Drive revenue, profitability and sustainable business growth across the depot's geographical area.
  • Develop and maintain strong relationships with existing customers while identifying opportunities to win new business.
  • Ensure the effective management, utilisation and availability of the depot's fleet and assets.
  • Oversee day-to-day depot operations, including hire, logistics, transport, maintenance and customer service.
  • Monitor key performance indicators and take action to improve productivity, service levels and profitability.
  • Manage budgets, costs and resources effectively, ensuring commercial targets are achieved.
  • Work collaboratively with Sales, Operations, Transport, Finance and other Head Office functions to deliver business objectives.
  • Ensure full compliance with company policies, health and safety requirements and environmental standards.
  • Identify and implement opportunities for continuous improvement across the depot.

About You:

We are looking for an experienced and commercially driven leader who enjoys taking ownership and making things happen.

You will have:

  • Proven experience in a senior management or General Manager role, ideally within hire, rental, construction, logistics, equipment or another operationally focused environment.
  • A strong track record of commercial and financial management, including budgets, costs and performance against targets.
  • Experience leading, developing and motivating a diverse operational team.
  • A customer-focused approach with the confidence to build and maintain strong commercial relationships.
  • Strong decision-making, problem-solving and organisational skills.
  • The ability to analyse performance, identify opportunities and turn them into practical action.
  • Excellent communication and influencing skills, with the ability to work effectively across different areas of the business.
  • A proactive, hands-on leadership style and a genuine commitment to high standards of safety, service and operational performance.

Experience within the plant, equipment or modular hire sector would be advantageous, but we are also interested in candidates with strong transferable experience from other asset-intensive or operational businesses.

What We Offer:

  • Competitive salary and bonus scheme
  • Fully expensed company car
  • Pension and life assurance
  • 33 days holiday (inclusive of public holidays and a festive closure)

If you are an experienced commercial leader who is looking for the opportunity to take full ownership of a successful depot and play a key role in its continued growth, we would love to hear from you.
