Full job description

Launch your maritime career with Harwich Haven Authority

Join Harwich Haven Authority as a Marine Apprentice and gain hands-on experience while completing a nationally recognised Level 3 Workboat Crewmember Apprenticeship.

This is a fantastic opportunity to start a career in the maritime industry, combining practical on-board experience with residential training placements at SeaRegs Training. You’ll develop the skills, knowledge and confidence needed to work safely and effectively as part of one of the UK’s leading trust ports.

The Role

This is an 18-month apprenticeship contract designed to support your development and completion of the Level 3 Workboat Crewmember Apprenticeship.

As a Marine Apprentice, you will support our busy marine teams, assisting the Coxswain and helping maintain Harwich Haven’s Aids to Navigation.

This is a varied, hands-on role where you will learn and develop experience across a range of marine operations, including:

  • Supporting the safe operation of conservancy vessels and gaining hands-on experience in a variety of marine operations, including maintenance, surveying, harbour patrols and response activities.
  • Supporting Pilot Launch operations
  • Carrying out minor repairs and maintenance tasks under guidance
  • Developing the skills required to work across both conservancy vessels and Pilot Launches
  • Working with different teams across the Authority to broaden your knowledge and understanding of harbour operations

Work Environment

Harwich Haven Authority operates 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. As part of the role, you will work a shift pattern that includes nights, weekends and Bank Holidays, and you’ll be required to work in all weather conditions.

This role offers the opportunity to be part of a team that plays an important role in keeping vessels moving safely through one of the UK’s busiest harbour areas.

Training & Development

Your apprenticeship will be delivered in partnership with SeaRegs Training, combining practical on-board learning with residential block placements at their training centres in Plymouth or London.

The first residential course will take place 01 October 2026 in Plymouth, with travel and accommodation provided where required.

Throughout your apprenticeship, you’ll balance practical experience with classroom-based learning, supported by experienced colleagues who will help guide you through every stage of your development.

What We’re Looking For

We’re looking for someone with enthusiasm, curiosity and a genuine interest in building a career in the maritime industry.

You’ll need:

  • A positive, can-do attitude and willingness to learn
  • Good communication skills and the ability to work well as part of a team
  • Commitment to working safely and following procedures
  • Minimum Grade 4 GCSE (or equivalent) in English and Maths, or willingness to work towards these alongside the apprenticeship
  • Ability to pass an ENG1 medical examination
  • Minimum age of 18 due to health and safety requirements
  • Willingness to work shifts and carry out duties at sea in all weather conditions

We value diversity and welcome applications from people of all backgrounds. We are committed to creating an inclusive workplace where everyone can develop and succeed.
